Newsmakers: August 2012 ======================= * Nicole Softness ## Shipp named Optometrist of the Year APHA President Melvin Shipp, OD, DrPH, MPH, received the 2012 Optometrist of the Year award from the American Optometric Association in June. He is the dean of the Ohio State University College of Optometry. ## APHA receives Partner of the Year award APHA in May received the 2012 Partner of the Year award from the Safe States Alliance. The award recognizes APHA’s leadership in bringing the nation’s attention to the importance of injury and violence prevention. ## Troutman receives Dr. James T. Black Award APHA President-elect Adewale Troutman, MD, MPH, MA, was named the 2012 recipient of the Dr. James T. Black Award by the 100 Black Men of America Inc., in June. Troutman directs the Center for Leadership in Public Health and for decades has tracked the social causes of health inequities in the United States. ## NACCHO elects new leaders The National Association of County and City Health Officials announced in June its 2012-2013 officers and board of directors. John W. Wiesman, MPH, CPH, will serve as NACCHO president; Terrance Allan, MPH, RS, will serve as president-elect; APHA member Georgia F. Heise, DrPH, will serve as vice president; and APHA member Lillian M. Shirley, MPH, MPA, will serve as immediate-past president. ## NIH elects Duran to research health disparities Deborah Guadalupe Duran, PhD, was selected in June to be the chief of the Office of Strategic Planning, Legislation and Science Policy by the National Institute on Minority Health and Health Disparities.
