Corbett appointed to nursing research group
APHA member James Corbett, JD, MDiv, in May was appointed as one of three new members of the National Advisory Council for Nursing Research. Corbett is senior vice president of community health and values integration at Centura Health and is a fellow at Harvard Medical School. The council is the principal advisory board for the National Institute of Nursing Research.
Holmes appointed to NIH council
APHA member King Holmes, MD, PhD, in June was appointed to the National Institutes of Health Council of Councils. Holmes chairs the University of Washington School of Public Health's Department of Global Health and is director of the university's Center for AIDS and STDs. The NIH Council of Councils advises the director of NIH on activities of NIH's Division of Program Coordination, Planning and Strategic Initiatives.
Buffalo school changes name to reflect epidemiology work
The University at Buffalo Department of Social and Preventive Medicine in March changed its name to the Department of Epidemiology and Environmental Health. The department, within the college's School of Public Health and Health Professions, went through a name change to reflect its past and ongoing epidemiological research.
Clabaugh named state department of public health director
Gerd Clabaugh, MPA, in May was appointed director of the Iowa Department of Public Health. Clabaugh served as the department's deputy director for nearly three years and is also a past president and member of the Iowa Public Health Association.
Devlin named to nonprofit group's board of trustees
Leah Devlin, DDS, MPH, in July was elected to the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation's Board of Trustees. Devlin is a professor in the Department of Health Policy and Management at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill's Gillings School of Public Health. Devlin is also on the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Foundation Board.
Morrisey joins Texas public health school faculty
Michael Morrisey, PhD, in May was named the newest faculty member in the Department of Health Policy and Management at the Texas A&M Health Science Center School of Public Health. Morrisey, who will begin teaching in September, is director of the Lister Hill Center for Health Policy and co-director of the Center for Outcomes and Effectiveness Research and Education at the University of Alabama at Birmingham.
Oregon public health school is state's first to achieve accreditation
Oregon State University's College of Public Health and Human Sciences in June became the first school of public health in the state to achieve accreditation. The school achieved accreditation through the Council on Education for Public Health and is the only accredited public health school between San Francisco and Seattle.
Rutter named division director of group focused on behavioral research
Joni Rutter, PhD, in May was named division director for the Division of Basic Neuroscience and Behavioral Research at the National Institute on Drug Abuse. Rutter has served as acting director of the division for the past three years. The division focuses on behavioral research centered on drug addiction.
Wah named new president of American Medical Association
Robert Wah, MD, in June was named the American Medical Association's 169th president. Wah previously served as chair of the association's Board of Trustees. He also teaches at the Walter Reed National Military Medical Center and the National Institutes of Health.
Werler named university's epidemiology chair
Martha Werler, ScD, MPH, in July began her new role as chair of Boston University School of Public Health's Department of Epidemiology. Werler is also a senior epidemiologist at the university's Slone Epidemiology Center and is a professor of epidemiology.
