Newsmakers: October 2015 ======================== * Natalie McGill ## APHA members participate in public health nurse leadership program Ten APHA members are part of a cohort selected in July to be part of the Public Health Nurse Leaders Program. The program is part of the Future of Nursing: Campaign for Action, a joint program of the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and AARP. Association members among the 25 in the cohort are: Noel Bazini-Barakat, RN, MSN, MPH; Robin Hannon, RN, MSN; Kay Henry, MSN, RN; Dorene Hersh, RN, MN; Monica Hughes, RN; Kathy Karsting, RN, MPH; Carolyn Nganga-Good, RN, MS, CPH; Ivonne Rivera-Newberry, RN; Patricia Scott, DNP, RN, PNP-BC, NCSN; and Amy Wilson, RN, MPH, APHN-BC. ## Brandt-Rauf receives award for occupational, environmental health work APHA member Paul Brandt-Rauf, MD, DrPH, ScD, FACOEM, in May received the Knudsen Lifetime Achievement in Occupational and Environmental Medicine Award. Brandt-Rauf is dean of the University of Illinois at Chicago’s School of Public Health and also served for more than 20 years as editor of the *Journal of Occupational and Environmental Medicine*. He received the award at the 2015 American Occupational Health Conference in Baltimore. ## Edwards named to Texas Board of Nursing APHA member Allison Edwards, DrPH, in July was one of seven people appointed to the Texas Board of Nursing. Her term will expire in January 2021. Edwards is an assistant professor of nursing systems at the UTHealth School of Nursing in Houston. ## Harris appointed department of health services chair at Washington school APHA member Jeffrey Harris, MD, MPH, MBA, in August began serving as the chair of the University of Washington School of Public Health’s Department of Health Services. He previously served as vice chair of the same department and as director of the university’s Health Promotion Research Center. ## Randolph receives fellowship lifetime achievement award APHA member Suzanne Randolph, PhD, MA, in August received the James Jones Minority Fellowship Program Lifetime Achievement Award at the 2015 Convention of the American Psychological Association. Randolph is the chief science officer for the MayaTech Corporation. Previously, Randolph was a faculty member in the University of Maryland-College Park’s Department of Family Sciences and an assistant professor of pediatrics and child health and research coordinator for the Howard University Newborn Study. ## Kilmarx named deputy directory of NIH center Peter Kilmarx, MD, in July was named deputy director of the National Institutes of Health’s Fogarty International Center. Kilmarx oversaw programs aimed at reducing HIV/AIDS, malaria and tuberculosis as the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s country director in Zimbabwe. ## Lenihan receives lifetime service award from NACCHO Patrick Lenihan, PhD, MUPP, in July received the Maurice “Mo” Mullet Lifetime of Service Award from the National Association of County and City Health Officials. Lenihan, who is a clinical associate professor at the University of Illinois at Chicago, received the award for his commitment to safety and public health for more than 25 years. He is a former deputy health commissioner for the Chicago Department of Health and a former NACCHO president. ## Paulson named interim associate dean at Washington, D.C., university Glenn Paulson, PhD, in July was named interim senior associate dean at George Washington University’s Milken Institute of Public Health.
