Newsmakers ========== ## Plowe named director of Duke Global Health Institute APHA member Christopher Plowe, MD, MPH, FASTMH, in September was named the director of the Duke Global Health Institute. He is the founding director of the Institute for Global Health at the University of Maryland School of Medicine, where he has served on the faculty since 1995. ## MacKenzie becomes dean of Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health APHA member Ellen MacKenzie, PhD, in October became dean of the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. In 2017, she was appointed the university’s 30th Bloomberg distinguished professor and was previously the chair of the Bloomberg School’s Department of Health Policy and Management. ## Wiesman elected ASTHO president APHA member John Wiesman, PhD, MPH, in September became the new president of the Association of State and Territorial Health Officials. Wiesman is the secretary of health at the Washington State Department of Health. ## Shapiro joins Families USA as chief of staff and director of children’s policy Lisa Shapiro, MPA, in October was named chief of staff and director of children’s policy at Families USA. Shapiro was formerly the vice president for health policy at First Focus. ## Thompson becomes director of Transportation for America Kevin Thompson, MPA, in October became director of Transportation for America. He previouslt served as the director of communications and legislative affairs for the Federal Railroad Administration at the U.S. Department of Transportation. ## Boodman promoted to senior director of programs for AIDS Services Foundation Sandra Boodman, MSW, in September was promoted to senior director of programs for AIDS Services Foundation Orange County in California. Boodman was formerly director of clinical and case management services for the foundation, and previously served as clinical supervisor for the organization. ## Szanton named director of Center for Innovative Care in Aging Sarah Szanton, PhD, ANP, FAAN, in February is slated to begin her role as director of the Center for Innovative care in Aging at the Johns Hopkins School of Nursing. She is a professor and director of the school’s PhD program and has served as the center’s director for policy since 2015. ## McKinney assumes director of development position at Brown Rebekah McKinney, MEd, in August became director of development at the Brown University School of Public Health and Hassenfeld Child Health Innovation Institute. McKinney formerly served as director of development for Families First in Boston. ## Ostell appointed director of NCBI James Ostell, PhD, in September was appointed the director of the National Center for Biotechnology Information, a division of the National Library of Medicine within the National Institutes of Health. Previously, he served as chief of the NCBI information Engineering Branch and was named an NIH distinguished investigator in 2011. ## Reynolds becomes associate dean of Johns Hopkins School of Nursing Nancy Reynolds, PhD, RN, C-NP, FAAN, in September assumed the position of associate dean of global affairs at the Johns Hopkins School of Nursing. She was previously the Independence Foundation professor of nursing at Yale University and has served as a member and trustee of the Yale-China Association. ## Giles assumes role as dean of UIC School of Public Health Wayne Giles, MD, MS, in September became dean of the University of Illinois at Chicago School of Public Health. He previously served as director of the Division for Heart Disease and Stroke Prevention at the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. *Received a promotion or award?
