Newsmakers ========== ## Foldy named Denver Public Health director APHA member Seth Foldy, MD, MPH, FAAP, in December was named the director of public health epidemiology, informatics and preparedness at Denver Public Health. He is a professor at the Medical College of Wisconsin. ## Zarbl named health sciences director APHA member Helmut Zarbl, PhD, in November was named director of the Environmental & Occupational Health Sciences Institute at Rutgers University. He is a professor in the department and an environmental carcinogenesis and chemoprevention researcher. ## Diez Rouz named IAPHS president-elect APHA member Ana Diez Rouz, MD, PhD, MPH, in January began her tenure as president-elect of the Interdisciplinary Association for Population Health Science. She is the dean of the Dornsife School of Public Health at Drexel University. ## Lushniak receives service award APHA member Boris Lushniak, MD, MPH, in November received the Distinguished Service Award from the American Medical Association. He is the dean of the University of Maryland School of Public Health and former acting surgeon general of the United States. ## Liese receives distinguished alumni award APHA member Angela Liese, PhD, in November received the H.A. Tyrolder Distinguished Alumni Award from the Epidemiology Chapter of the Gillings School of Global Public Health Alumni Association at the University of North Carolina Chapel Hill. She is a professor of epidemiology and biostatistics and the Arnold School of Public Health at the University of South Carolina. ## Apovian named president of the Obesity Society Caroline Apovian, MD, FACP, FACN, in November was named president of the Obesity Society. She is a professor of medicine and pediatrics in the Section of Endocrinology, Diabetes and Nutrition at the Boston University School of Medicine. ## Marcus named public health dean Bess Marcus, PhD, in November began her tenure as the Brown University School of Public Health. She previously served as senior associate dean at the University of California-San Diego School of Public Health and founded and directed the UCSD Institute for Public Health. ## Miller named Public Health Solutions director Jacquelyn Miller, DDS, in November became the health director for Public Health Solutions. She was previously the office director for vocational rehabilitation in the Nebraska Department of Education. ## McDermott named distinguished scientist Mary McDermott, MD, in December was named a Distinguished Scientist by the American Heart Association. She is the Jeremiah Stamler Professor of Medicine in the Division of General Internal Medicine and Geriatrics and of Preventive Medicine at the Northwestern Medicine Feinberg School of Medicine. ## Nápoles named scientific director Anna María Nápoles, PhD, MPH, in November began her appointment as scientific director of the Division of Intramural Research at the National Institute on Minority Health and Health Disparities. She is the first Latina to hold the position. Nápoles was previously a professor and behavioral epidemiologist in the the University of California-San Francisco’s Division of General Internal Medicine in the Department of Medicine. ## Glass named nursing endowed chair Nancy Glass, PhD, MPH, RN, FAAN, in November was named the Independence Foundation chair in nursing education at the Johns Hopkins School of Nursing. She is a professor and associate director of the Johns Hopkins Center for Global Health. ## Durvasula named medicine department chair Ravi Durvasula, MD, in November began his appointment as chair of the Department of Medicine of Loyola Medicine and the Loyola University Chicago Stritch School of Medicine. He was previously a professor of medicine and infectious diseases and director of the Center for Global Health at the University of New Mexico School of Medicine. ## Simon receives women’s health award Melissa Simon, MD, MPH, in November received the 2017 Marion Spencer Fay Award, honoring her contributions to women’s health, health equity and national health policy. She is the vice chair for clinical research in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology and a professor in the Departments of Preventive Medicine and Medical Social Sciences at the Northwestern Medicine Feinberg School of Medicine. ## Waites named president of ARNS Karion Gray Waites, DNP, RN, FNP-BC, CRRN, in November took office as president of the Association of Rehabilitation Nurses.
