Newsmakers ========== * Ayan Warfa ## Bowie named director APHA member Janice Bowie, PhD, MPH, in December was named director of Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health’s Doctor of Public Health Program. Bowie is a faculty member at the Hopkins Center for Health Disparities Solutions. ## Joseph appointed vice dean APHA member Michael Joseph, PhD, MPH in January was appointed vice dean of academic and student affairs of the State University of New York Downstate School of Public Health. Joseph previously was vice chair of SUNY Department of Epidemiology and Biostatistics and an interim chair of the Department of Environmental and Occupational Health Sciences. ## Delva receives award APHA member Marlyn Delva, EdD, in January received the 2019 Association of Schools and Programs of Public Health Student Services Excellence Award. At Columbia University Mailman School of Public Health, Delva serves as associate dean of student affairs and education, dean of students, and assistant professor of epidemiology and sociomedical sciences. ## Wiesman appointed to presidential council John Wiesman, DrPH, MPH, in December was named the co-chair of the Presidential Advisory Council on HIV/AIDs. Wiesman is the secretary of health for Washington state and previously served as president of the Association of State and Territorial Health Officials. ## Cabana, Pbert appointed to task force Michael Cabana, MD, MA, MPH and Lori Pbert, PhD, were appointed to four-year terms on the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force starting in January. Cabana is a professor of pediatrics, epidemiology and biostatistics at the University of California-San Francisco and the chief of general pediatrics. Pbert is a professor at the University of Massachusetts Medical School, where she is also director and founder of the Center for Tobacco Treatment Research and Training. ## Wilkins named vice president Consuelo Wilkins, MD, MSCI, in January was named vice president for health equity at the Vanderbilt University Medical Center and associate dean for health equity with the Vanderbilt School of Medicine. She will oversee the newly established office of health equity. Wilkens is associate professor of medicine and executive director of the Meharry-Vanderbilt alliance. ## Rozier named health equity champion Gary Rozier, DDS, MPH, in December was named the recipient of the North Carolina Oral Health Equity Champion Award from the Foundation of Health Leadership and Innovation. Rozier is a professor of health policy and management at the University of North Carolina Gillings School of Public Health. ## Nelson named associate dean of global health equity LaRon Nelson, PhD, RN, FNP, FNAP, in January was appointed associate dean for global health equity at the Yale School of Nursing, where he will also hold the position of Independence Foundation associate professor of nursing. Previously, Nelson was the dean’s endowed fellow in health disparities and associate director of international research in the Center for AIDS Research at the University of Rochester School of Nursing. ## Shah becomes senior medical advisor Anand Shah, MD, MPH, in January was appointed senior medical advisor for innovation at the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services. Shah most recently was chief medical officer for the Center for Medicare and Medicaid Innovation. ## Grover receives award Frederick Grover, MD, in January was named the recipient of the John P. McGovern Compleat Physician Award by the Harris County Medical Society and the Houston Academy of Medicine. Grover is professor emeritus of Cardiothoracic Surgery at the University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus. ## Demissie appointed dean Kitaw Demissie, MD, PhD, in January was appointed dean of the State University of New York Downstate School of Public Health. Previously, Demissie was the associate dean for faculty affairs at the Rutgers University School of Public Health. ## Jain appointed chief academic officer Mukesh Jain, MD, in January was appointed chief academic officer University Hospitals in Cleveland, Ohio. Jain will retain his current positions as chief scientific officer at the UH Harrington Discovery Institute and chief research officer at UH Harrington Hear & Vascular Institute. ## Mahalingaiah named vice president Shruthi Mahalingaiah, MD, MSPH, in January has been named vice president of the New England Fertility Society. Mahalingaiah is an assistant professor of epidemiology at Boston University School of Public Health, and an assistant professor of obstetrics and gynecology at the School of Medicine. *Received a promotion or award?
