## Chen receives advocacy award

APHA member Anthony L-T Chen, MD, MPH, in July was named the 2019 Advocate of the Year by the National Association of County and City Health Officials. Chen is director of health of the Tacoma-Pierce County Health Department in Tacoma, Washington.

## Nursing group names living legends

The American Academy of Nursing in July designated five Living Legends to be honored at its annual conference on Oct. 24. APHA members Catherine Georges, EdD, RN, FAAN, and Linda Schwartz, DrPH, RN, are among those who will be recognized. Georges is chair of the Department of Nursing at Lehman College of the City University of New York and Schwartz is a former assistant secretary for policy and planning at the Veterans Health Administration.

## Berg named associate center director

APHA member Carla Berg, PhD, MBA, in July was named associate center director for population sciences and policy for the George Washington University Cancer Center. She is also a professor of prevention and community health at the Milken Institute School of Public Health.

## Turchi honored for work with children

APHA member Renee Turchi, MD, MPH, in June was recognized by Family Voices as a 2019 Champion of Children’s Health. Turchi is a clinical professor in the Department of Community Health and Prevention at Drexel University’s Dornsife School of Public Health and the director of the Maternal and Child Health Program.

## Hyder receives award

APHA member Adnan Hyder, MD, PhD, MPH, in July received the C. Everett Koop Medal of Distinction from Safe Kids Worldwide for his work to prevent childhood injuries. Hyder is the senior associate dean for research and a professor of global health at the George Washington University’s Milken Institute School of Public Health.

## Lushniak appointed to board

APHA member Boris Lushniak, MD, MPH, in July was appointed to serve a two-year term on the Board of Regents for the American College of Preventive Medicine. Lushniak, a former U.S. deputy surgeon general, is dean of the University of Maryland School of Public Health.

## Oberlander named editor

Jonathan Oberlander, PhD, in August was named the editor of the *Journal of Health Politics, Policy and Law.* Oberlander is a professor of health policy and management at the University of North Carolina Gillings School Of Public Health and a professor and chair of the Department of Social Medicine at the university.

## Slavova receives research award

Svetla Slavova, PhD, in March received the 2018 Jess Kraus Award for her paper in *Injury Epidemiology* on “Interrupted Time Series Design to Evaluate the Effect of the ICD-9-CM to ICD-10-CM Coding Transition Injury Hospitalization Trends.” Slavova is an associate professor at the University of Kentucky’s Department of Biostatistics and a faculty researcher at the Kentucky Injury Prevention and Research Center.

## Maman named faculty director

Suzanne Maman, PhD, in May was named University of North Carolina faculty director at the Duke-UNC Rotary Peace Center. Maman is a professor at the health behavior department at the university’s Gillings School of Global Public Health and co-leader of the Master of Public Health global health concentration.

## Bruno named associate dean

Denise Bruno, MD, MPH, in July was appointed associate dean for global engagement and director of the State University of New York-Downstate’s Center for Global Health. Bruno is an associate professor in the Department of Community Health Sciences.

## Makary named policy advisor

Martin Makary, MD, MPH, will serve FAIR Health as its policy advisor, the organization announced in August. Makary is a professor of health policy and management at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health and a professor of surgery at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine.

## Ramos receives award

Athena Ramos, PhD, MBA, MS, was honored at Omaha’s Women’s Center for Advancement’s 32nd Tribute to Women in June. The award celebrates women who have made extraordinary impacts on the Omaha community. Ramos is an assistant professor of health promotion at the Center for Reducing Health Disparities at the University of Nebraska Medical Center.

## Wickliffe recognized for scholarship

Jeffrey Wickliffe, MS, PhD, in May was named one of the 2019 Emerging Leaders in Health and Medicine Scholars by the National Academy of Medicine. Wickliffe is an associate professor in the School of Public Health and Tropical Medicine at Tulane University.

## UCLA launches center

The UCLA Fielding School of Public Health in June launched the Center for Healthcare Management that will help academic researchers, students and others explore critical issues in the management of health care organizations.
