Newsmakers: September 2020 ========================== * Sophie Wazlowski ## Martinez-Gonzalez named fellow APHA member Liduvina Martinez-Gonzalez, MS, in June was named a fellow of the American College of Healthcare Executives. She is executive director and vice president for clinical administration at the University Eye Center at the State University of New York College of Optometry. ## McGovern named to council APHA member Terry McGovern, MD, in June was invited to be a member of the Council on Foreign Relations. He is a professor and chair of the Heilbrunn Department of Population and Family Health at Columbia University’s Mailman School of Public Health. ## Bertozzi appointed editor-in-chief Stefano Bertozzi MD, PhD, in June was named editor-in-chief of *Rapid Reviews: COVID-19,* a journal published by MIT Press. Bertozzi is dean emeritus and professor of health policy and management at the Univeresity of California-Berkeley School of Public Health. ## Eberth recognized for research Jan Eberth, MSPH, PhD, in June was named Outstanding Researcher of the Year by the National Rural Health Association. Eberth is an associate professor in the Department of Epidemiology and Biostatistics and director of the Rural and Minority Health Research Center at the University of South Carolina Arnold School of Public Health. ## Johnson named CEO Alexis McGill Johnson, MA, in June was named president and CEO of the Planned Parenthood Federation of America and the Planned Parenthood Action Fund. She served as acting president and CEO of Planned Parenthood for the last year and has also held board chair and member positions within the organization. ## Schaechter appointed chair Judy Schaechter, MD, MBA, in June was named a 2020-2021 health policy fellow by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and the National Academy of Medicine. Scheachter is a professor and chair of the Department of Pediatrics at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine. ## Peek-Asa wins inaugural award Corinne Peek-Asa, MPH, PhD, in May was one of the first two awardees of the new UI Distinguished Professorship program by the University of Iowa Office of the Provost. Peek-Asa serves as a professor and associate dean for research in the Department of Occupational and Environmental Health at the University of Iowa College of Public Health. ## Shattuck joins Mathematic Health Unit Paul Shattuck, PhD, in July joined the Mathematica Health Unit as a senior fellow. He previously served as a professor and founding leader of the A.J. Drexel Autism Institute’s Life Course Outcomes Program at Drexel University. ## Noorestani joins APHA staff Arianne Noorestani in July joined APHA to support the Healthiest Cities & Counties Challenge as project communication support specialist. ## Underwriters group selects new board The National Association of Health Underwriters announced the members of its new board of trustees in July. They include Dane Rianhard, president; Eugene Starks, president-elect; Kelly Fristoe, vice president; Eric Kohlsdorf, treasurer; and Alycia Riedl, secretary.
