Newsmakers: November/December 2021 ================================== * Aaron Warnick ## Marshall named associate dean APHA member Nandi Marshall, DrPH, MPH, CHES, was named associate dean of academic affairs at Georgia Southern’s University’s Jiann-Ping Hsu College of Public Health in August. Marshall, who serves on APHA’s Executive Board, is an associate professor of health policy and community health. ## Valenciano named director APHA member Sandra Valenciano, MD, MPH, was appointed district health director for the DeKalb County Board of Health in July. Valenciano assumed the role on interim basis in April. Previously, Valenciano served as the board of health’s medical director in the Division of Community Health and Prevention Services. ## Porter receives endowment In August, Johns Hopkins University Bloomberg School of Public Health named APHA member Keshia Pollack Porter, PhD, MPH, as a Bloomberg Centennial professor. Porter is a professor of health policy and management at the Bloomberg school. The professorship is part of the Bloomberg American Health Initiative. ## Kaufmann named physician of year In August, APHA member Kristiana Kaufmann, MD, MPH, was named the 2021 Emergency Physician of the Year Award from the Michigan College of Emergency Physicians. The award recognizes Kaufmann’s practice at Detroit Medical Center Huron Valley-Sinai Hospital and her professorship at Wayne State University School of Medicine. ## Desai wins epidemiology award APHA member Gauri Desai, PhD, MPH, received the 2021 Rebecca James Baker Award from the International Society of Environmental Epidemiology in August. Desai is a clinical assistant professor in epidemiology and environmental health at the University at Buffalo-State University of New York. Desai was recognized for her work researching associations between arsenic exposure and development among Uruguayan schoolchildren. ## Vanderhoff named director In August, Bruce Vanderhoff, MD, was appointed director of the Ohio Department of Health. Vanderhoff had previously served as chief medical officer at the Ohio department. Vanderhoff is the third director to lead the Ohio department during the COVID-19 pandemic. ## Toker named editor The American Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology named Alex Toker, PhD, editor-in-chief of the Journal of Biological Chemistry in July. Toker is associate director of the Cancer Research Institute at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center. His five-year term began Oct. 1. ## Davis named director In September, Matifadza Hlatshwayo Davis, MD, MPH, was appointed director of the Department of Health for the City of St. Louis. Davis previously served as infectious disease faculty at the John Cochran Veterans Affairs Medical Center. Her appointment began in October. ## Kauerauf named director Donald Kauerauf was appointed director of the Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services in July. Kauerauf previously served as assistant director of the Illinois Department of Health until his 2018 retirement.
