TY - JOUR T1 - NIH comes to agreement on use of HeLa cancer cells in research JF - The Nation's Health JO - Nations Health SP - 6 LP - 6 VL - 43 IS - 8 AU - Kim Krisberg Y1 - 2013/10/01 UR - http://www.thenationshealth.org/content/43/8/6.2.abstract N2 - In 1951 and unbeknownst to her, cancer patient Henrietta Lacks became the source of the first human cells cultured for continuous use in research. In fact her cells, now known as HeLa cells and taken during a biopsy of a tumor on her cervix, are the most widely used human cell lines in existence. But a recent publication of the first sequence of the full HeLa genome raised serious ethical concerns and has led to a new agreement between the National Institutes of Health and the Lacks family.
