Alwan named WHO regional director

Ala Alwan, MD, in January was named regional director for the Mediterranean region of the World Health Organization. Alwan previously worked in the organization’s noncommunicable diseases and mental health area.

Bushnell, Wilson, named directors at NIH

The National Institutes of Health recently announced two new appointments. In July, Catherine Bushnell, PhD, was appointed scientific director in the National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine. In that role, she will lead a multidisciplinary neuroscience and pain research program. In January, M. Roy Wilson, MD, MS, was named deputy director of strategic scientific planning and program coordination at the National Institute on Minority Health and Health Disparities.

Lazarus to lead American Medical Association

Jeremy Lazarus, MD, in June was inaugurated as the 167th president of the American Medical Association. Lazarus works as a private-practice psychiatrist in Denver and also serves as a clinical professor of psychiatry at the University of Colorado School of Medicine in Denver.

Bond takes top job at FASEB

The Federation of American Societies for Experimental Biology in July named Judith Bond, PhD, as its new president. Bond, who is professor emeritus of biochemistry and molecular biology at Penn State College of Medicine in Hershey, Pa., will serve one year as the federation’s leader.

Bailey takes reins at National Medical Association

Rahn Kennedy Bailey, MD, FAPA, in July was named president of the National Medical Association. Bailey chairs the Department of Psychiatry at Meharry Medical College.

NIH names three new women’s health researchers

The National Institutes of Health in June named Afaf Meleis, PhD; Heidi Nelson, MD, MPH; and Gerson Weiss, MD; to its Advisory Committee on Research on Women’s Health.
