Arnett wins Gold Heart Award

APHA member Donna Arnett, PhD, MSPH, FAHA, in June received the 2017 Gold Heart Award from the American Heart Association. Arnett serves as dean and professor of epidemiology at the University of Kentucky College of Public Health.

Marcus named school of public health dean

APHA member Bess Marcus, PhD, in June was named dean of the Brown University School of Public Health. Marcus is the first senior associate dean for public health at the University Of California-San Diego School of Medicine. Marcus will begin her term Nov. 1.

Scutchfield wins intellectual achievement award

APHA member Douglas Scutchfield, MD, in May received the University of Kentucky Libraries Medallion for Intellectual Achievement. Now retired, Scutchfield was the founding director of the University of Kentucky’s School of Public Health and Center for Health Services Research and Management as well as associate dean of the College of Medicine.

APHA hires new staff members

Several new professionals have joined APHA’s staff in recent months. Louise Dettman, communications specialist, began in April; Holly Grosholz, component affairs coordinator, joined in August; Megan Lowry, communications specialist, began in June; Mariza Silva, meetings manager, began in July; and Angelica Walker, meetings and marketing coordinator, began in March.

Rothman wins career accomplishment award

Kenneth Rothman, DrPH, MPH, DMD, in June received the Society for Epidemiologic Research’s Career Accomplishment Award at the society’s annual meeting. Rothman serves as a professor of epidemiology at the Boston University School of Public Health and vice president for epidemiology research at RTI Health Solutions.

Khabbaz named director of CDC infectious disease center

Rima Khabbaz, MD, in July was named director of the National Center for Emerging and Zoonotic Infectious Diseases at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. She will continue her roles as CDC deputy director for infectious diseases and director of the Office of Infectious Diseases. Khabbaz also serves as clinical adjunct professor of medicine at Emory University.

Glass wins international achievement award

Nancy Glass, PhD, MPH, RN, FAAN, in June received the 2017 International Achievement Award from the International Council of Nurses’ Florence Nightingale International Foundation. Glass serves as a professor and associate dean for research at the Johns Hopkins School of Nursing and associate director of the Johns Hopkins Center for Global Health.

Ringo named hospital president and chief operating officer

Jonathan Ringo, MD, in May was named president and chief operating officer of Sinai Hospital of Baltimore by LifeBridge Health after serving as interim COO. Ringo previously served as director of population information at Northwell Health System and senior scientist and global strategy manager for GlaxoSmithKline.

Wu named chair of biostatistics

Hulin Wu, PhD, MS, in May was named chair of the Department of Biostatistics at the University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston. Wu previously served as associate chair of the department and is a professor in the School of Biomedical Informatics.

Buehler named college of physicians chair

James Buehler, MD, in May was named chair of the Section on Public Health and Preventive Medicine of the College of Physicians of Philadelphia. Buehler serves as a clinical professor of health management and policy at the Drexel University Dornsife School of Public Health.

Brown named American Physiological Society president

Dennis Brown, PhD, in May was named the 90th president of the American Physiological Society at the society’s annual meeting. He serves as a professor of medicine at Harvard Medical School and director of the Massachusetts General Hospital program in membrane biology. Brown is also the associate director of the MGH Center for Systems Biology and director of the MGH Office for Research Career Development.

Jensen receives cancer society grant

Ryan Jensen, PhD, in May received a $792,000 grant from the American Cancer Society to research failures in DNA repair related to cancer risk and treatment. Jensen is an assistant professor of therapeutic radiology at Yale School of Medicine.

Cerfolio named lung cancer center director

Robert Cerfolio, MD, in June joined NYU Langone as chief of clinical thoracic surgery. He also became the first director of the Lung Cancer Center at the Perlmutter Cancer Center at NYU Langone. Cerfolio previously served as the James H. Estes Family Lung Cancer Research Endowed Chair and chief of thoracic surgery at University of Alabama Hospital in Birmingham. He was also director of the American Association of Thoracic Surgery’s Robotic Graham Fellowship.

Derksen named president of academy of physicians

Daniel Derksen, MD, in May was appointed president of the Arizona Academy of Family Physicians. Derksen serves as the Walter H. Pearce Endowed Chair and professor of public health policy and management at the University of Arizona Mel and Enid Zuckerman College of Public Health.

Monoian named distinguished visitor

Anita Monoian in May was named the 2017 Geiger Gibson Program Distinguished Visitor at the George Washington University Milken Institute School of Public Health. Monoian serves as president and CEO of Yakima Neighborhood Health Services of Washington State and was previously chair of the National Association of Community Health Centers.

Ventura named chief nursing officer

Rosemary Ventura, DNP, RN-BC, in May was named the chief nursing informatics officer for NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital. Ventura served as director of information technology clinical services at Health Quest and assistant director of inpatient clinical systems at NYU Langone Medical Center.

Felson wins Carol Nachman award

David Felson, MD, MPH, in May received the 2017 Carol Nachman Prize for Rheumatology. Felson serves as a professor of epidemiology at the Boston University School of Public Health and professor of medicine at the School of Medicine.

Pavletich appointed CEO

James Pavletich, MHA, CAE, in August became CEO of the National Commission on Correctional Health Care. Over the course of his career, he has worked at the Accreditation Association for Ambulatory Health Care, American Medical Association and American College of Healthcare Executives.

Public health organizations win food protection award

Boulder County Public Health in Colorado and the Kansas City Missouri Health Department in July were named the winners of the Conference for Food Protection’s 2017 Samuel J. Crumbine Consumer Protection Award for Excellence in Food Protection.
