USPSTF names new chair, vice chair, member

The U.S. Preventive Services Task Force in March appointed APHA member Susan Curry, PhD, as chair; Alex Krist, MD, MPH, as vice chair; and John Wong, MD, as a member. Curry is the interim executive vice president and provost of the University of Iowa, where she is also a distinguished professor of health management and policy in the College of Public Health. Krist serves as a professor of family medicine and population health at Virginia Commonwealth University, co-director of the Virginia Ambulatory Care Outcomes Research Network and director of community-engaged research at the Center for Clinical and Translational Research. Wong is chief of the division of clinical decisionmaking in the Department of Medicine at Tufts Medical Center and professor of medicine at the Tufts University School of Medicine.

Valerio named deputy editor of Health Promotion Practice journal

Melissa Valerio, PhD, MPH, in January was named deputy editor of Health Promotion Practice. Valerio is the regional dean of the University of Texas Health Science Center at the Houston School of Public Health, where she is also an associate professor in the Department of Health Promotion and Behavioral Sciences.

Tomlinson named director of CDC Division of Global HIV & TB

Hank Tomlinson, PhD, in April was named the director of the Division of Global HIV & TB within the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Previously, Tomlinson served as the acting associate chief for science for the Capacity Building Branch of CDC’s Division of HIV/AIDS Prevention.

Olbricht becomes president of the American Academy of Dermatology

Suzanne Olbricht, MD, FAAD, in February began her one-year term as president of the American Academy of Dermatology and the American Academy of Dermatology Association. Olbricht is an associate professor of dermatology at Harvard Medical School and chief of dermatology at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center.

Aiyelawo appointed chief operating officer of NIH Clinical Center

Pius Aiyelawo, MPA, in April was appointed chief operating officer of the National Institutes of Health Clinical Center. Aiyelawo is a retired U.S. Navy captain. Formerly, Aiyelawo served as assistant director of research and development for the U.S. Navy Bureau of Medicine and Surgery and chief operating officer and deputy commander of Naval Medical Research and Development Command.

Harris appointed Alabama state health officer

Scott Harris, MD, MPH, FACP, FIDSA, in February became Alabama’s 12th state health officer. Harris is co-chair of the Alabama Opioid Overdose and Addiction Council. Previously, Harris served as the medicine department chair at Decatur General Hospital and Parkway Medical Center and as chair of the Decatur Morgan Hospital Foundation.

Anthony becomes minority health director

Monique Anthony, MPH, CHES, in February was named director of the Office of Minority Health and Disparities Elimination at the Tennessee Department of Health, where she previously held the position of director of community capacity building. Anthony is also co-chair of the executive committee of the Tennessee Cancer Coalition.

Hotez receives Research!America Advocacy Award

Peter Hotez, MD, PhD, in March received the Research!America Advocacy Award for Sustained National Leadership. Hotez is dean of the National School of Tropical Medicine at Baylor College of Medicine, where he also serves as a professor of pediatrics and molecular virology and microbiology.

Hwang named chief medical officer and director of clinical innovation

Connie Hwang, MD, MPH, in January was named chief medical officer and director of clinical innovation of the Alliance of Community Health Plans. Formerly, Hwang served as vice president of quality and clinical performance at Evolent Health.

Viviano elected chair of California Children’s Hospital Association

Paul Viviano, MA, in February was elected chair of the California Children’s Hospital Association Board of Trustees. Viviano is president and CEO of Children’s Hospital Los Angeles. Previously, Viviano served as CEO of University of California-San Diego Health System and associate vice chancellor of University of California-San Diego Health Sciences.
