Bartick takes top role at national breastfeeding coalition

APHA member Melissa Bartick, MD, in August was elected director and Finance Committee chair of the United States Breastfeeding Committee. The coalition of national organizations works to protect, promote and support breastfeeding. Bartick will serve a two-year term.

University of Florida taps Perri

APHA member Michael G. Perri, PhD, in November was named dean of the University of Florida College of Public Health and Health Professions. Perri joined the college’s faculty in 1990 and has served as the interim dean since June 2007.

Research!America takes top honors

Research!America’s “Your Candidates, Your Health 2008,” an initiative that helped voters know where candidates stood on health and research issues, in October won the National Capital Chapter of the Public Relations Society of America’s top award for Web site excellence. APHA is a partner in the Research!America initiative.

Mueller, Siegel appointed to AHRQ National Advisory Council

APHA members Keith Mueller, PhD, and Bruce Siegel, MD, MPH, are among seven new members appointed in November to the National Advisory Council of the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality. The council’s 21 members hail from the private and public sectors.

Guttmacher to lead NICHD

APHA member Alan Guttmacher, MD, in December was named acting director of the Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institute of Child Health and Human Development. A pediatrician and medical geneticist, Guttmacher previously served in leadership roles at the National Human Genome Research Institute.

Foundation unveils new name

The American Legacy Foundation in November unveiled a new name and logo to better reflect its role in preventive care. While legally remaining the American Legacy Foundation, the organization will now use the shortened name “Legacy” for its daily operations. The new logo includes a new tagline, “For Longer Healthier Lives,” which highlights the organization’s public health focus.

Green named director of NHGRI

Eric Green, MD, PhD, in November was selected to be the next director of the National Human Genome Research Institute, replacing Francis Collins, MD, PhD, who in August became director of the National Institutes of Health. Green formerly served as NHGRI’s scientific director and as director of the NHGRI Division of Intramural Research.

Web sites win awards

The Health Improvement Institute in November announced the winners of its 2009 Aesculapius Award of Excellence. Awards honoring health-related Web sites include the National Newborn Screening and Genetics Resource Center at http://genes-r-us.uthscsa.edu, the U.S. Department of Heath and Human Services’ www.healthfinder.gov; and the U.S. Department of Defense’s Tricare at www.ucanquit2.org.
