Cardiovascular health

The Journal of the American Medical Association Network in February debuted its newest journal, JAMA Cardiology. The journal, available monthly in print and online, will feature peer-reviewed research on topics such as translational research, epidemiology, prevention and health care policy related to cardiovascular medicine. Environmental health

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency in February launched its Drinking Water Mapping Application to Protect Source Waters. Health advocates can use the online mapping tool to find out whether water supplies are contaminated and look at accidental spills, among other tasks. Women’s health

Turner Publishing in March published “The Doctor Will See You Now: Recognizing and Treating Endometriosis.” Authored by Tamer Seckin, MD, the book features personal stories from nearly two dozen women about their diagnosis and treatment of endometriosis. The book is geared toward women and their families as well as health care professionals who may lack knowledge about the illness. For more information, visit www.turnerpublishing.com.

Minority health

The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services’ Office of Minority Health in March launched its Mapping Medicare Disparities online tool. The tool allows users to assess health disparities in specific geographic areas based on factors such as racial and ethnic populations, prevalence of chronic diseases and eligibility for Medicare and Medicaid. Psychology

The American Psychological Association in March announced its newest journal Stigma and Health. The journal, which is published quarterly, features peer-reviewed articles on how stigma negatively affects physical and mental health. For more information, visit www.apa.org/pubs/journals.

Disability

The Achieving a Better Life Experience National Resource Center in March launched www.ablenrc.org. The website is a resource that features webinars and presentations on the Achieving a Better Life Experience Act of 2014, which allows families of people with disabilities to create tax-deferred savings accounts for care-related expenses. The site features information on act-related programs across the U.S., policy summaries, research and more.

Nutrition

The Interagency Committee on Human Nutrition Research in March released the 2016-2021 National Nutrition Research Roadmap. The roadmap outlines 120 short- and long-term strategies to improve U.S. nutrition across 11 areas. The roadmap focus on topics such as research gaps in health disparities and nutrition-related chronic diseases. Nursing

The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services in March published “The Skilled Nursing Facility Utilization and Payment Public Use File.” The data set contains information on over 15,000 skilled nursing facilities, submitted charges and payments in 2013 and is organized by provider, state, and resource utilization group. Child health

The National Institute on Drug Abuse in March released “Principles of Substance Abuse Prevention for Early Childhood: A Research-Based Guide.” The online guide looks at the potential precursors of future substance abuse, such as uncontrolled aggression and life transitions where kids are at their most vulnerable, such as starting school.
