Dingle named commanding general

APHA member Brig. Gen. Scott Dingle in April was named commanding general of the Regional Health Command-Atlantic military health system. Dingle was director of health care operations at the Office of the Surgeon General and was commander of the 30th Medical Brigade in Germany.

Rader receives American College of Physicians Award

APHA member Daniel Rader, MD, in April received the American College of Physicians Award for Outstanding Work in Science as Related to Medicine. He is the Seymour Gray professor of molecular medicine, as well as the chair of the Genetics Department at the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania.

Cropp appointed to the Society of Women’s Health board of directors

Anne Cropp, PharmD, in April was appointed to the board of directors for the Society of Women’s Health Research. Cropp is a board-certified clinical pharmacologist and has been in the pharmaceutical industry since 1991. She is the founder of Early Access Care, LLC, which provides services to biopharmaceutical companies.

Rancourt elected Promerica Health vice president

Jennifer Rancourt, MPA, in April was named vice president of communications and compliance for Promerica Health. Rancourt served as a medical technologist and worked in long-term care administration and sales.

Valadka elected president of American Association of Neurological Surgeons

Alex Valadka, MD, FAANS, in April was named president of the American Association of Neurological Surgeons. Valadka is a professor and chair of the Department of Neurosurgery at the Virginia Commonwealth University and director of the American Board of Neurological Surgery.

Crossley named recipient of National Science Foundation Early Career Award

Steven Crossley, PhD, in April was awarded a five-year National Science Foundation Early Career Award. The grant will go toward research on chemical reactions. Crossley is an assistant professor at the University of Oklahoma School of Chemical, Biological and Materials Engineering.

Roberts chosen as visiting professor

Jennifer Roberts, DrPH, MPH, in March was chosen to be a visiting professor at the School of Physical Education, Sport and Exercise Sciences at the University of Otago in Dunedin, New Zealand. She was a visiting researcher and symposium speaker at the University’s Active Living and Environment Conference in August. Roberts is an assistant professor of kinesiology at the University of Maryland School of Public Health.

Bleakley receives 2017 innovative research grant

Marie Bleakley, MD, in April received the 2017 Innovative Research Grant in immuno-oncology from Stand Up To Cancer. Bleakley is a pediatric oncology physician-scientist at the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center and will use the three-year grant to develop T-cell therapies for a type of acute myeloid leukemia.

Woodruff receives Guggenheim fellowship

Teresa Woodruff, PhD, in April was named a 2017 Guggenheim Fellow. Woodrow is chief of reproductive science in medicine in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at the Feinberg School of Medicine at Northwestern University. The fellowship will support her research in reproductive health and fertility preservation.

Scammell receives environmental health science award

Madeleine Scammell, DSc, in April was awarded a National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences Outstanding New Environmental Health Science Award. Scammell’s award will go toward research on chronic kidney disease among agricultural workers in El Salvador. Scammell is an assistant professor of environmental health at the Boston University School of Public Health and a JPB Environmental Health Fellow at the Harvard School of Public Health.

Ardehali named recipient of 2017 Ellis Island Medal of Honor

Abbas Ardehali, MD, in April was named the 2017 recipient of the Ellis Island Medal of Honor by the National Ethnic Coalition of Organizations. Ardehali is a professor of surgery and medicine in the Cardiothoracic Surgery Division at the David Geffen School of Medicine at the University of California-Los Angeles. Ardehali is also the director of the UCLA Heart and Lung Transplant program.

Shemin elected to board of governors

Richard Shemin, MD, in April was named to the board of directors of the American College of Surgeons. Shemin is the executive vice chair of surgery, co-director of the cardiovascular center and director of cardiovascular quality at Ronald Reagan University of California-Los Angeles Medical Center.

Melian receives Distinguished Service Award

Edward Melian, MD, in April received the Chicago Radiology Society’s 2017 Distinguished Service Award. The award is the highest honor and recognizes Melian’s expertise in radiation oncology and radiology. Melian is an associate professor in the radiation oncology and neurological surgery departments at the Loyola University Chicago Stritch School of Medicine.

Grossman appointed chair of US Preventive Services Task Force

David Grossman, MD, MPH, in May was appointed chair of the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force. Grossman is a senior investigator at the Kaiser Permanente Washington Health Research Institute, a pediatrician at Kaiser Permanente Washington and a senior medical director for the Washington Permanente Medical Group.

Shaddy named to top pediatrician post

Robert Shaddy, MD, in April was named Children’s Hospital Los Angeles’ chair of the Department of Pediatrics at the Keck School of Medicine at the University of Southern California, and pediatrician-in-chief and senior vice president of academic affairs at the hospital. Shaddy is a cardiologist and served as vice chair of the Department of Pediatrics at the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania.
