Smoking cessation

The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center’s Tobacco Outreach Education Program in June launched the Tobacco-Free Teens App. The free app, which is compatible with the iPhone, iPad and iPod touch, contains a series of games that reinforce the negative effects of tobacco use. Cancer

Omnigraphics in August published “Cancer Information For Teens, Third Edition.” The book addresses topics such as which cancers are of greater concern for teens and how cancer treatment affects a teen’s physical health and social life. For more information, visit www.omnigraphics.com.

Maternal health

The Johns Hopkins University Press in November is expected to publish “The PKU Paradox: A Short History of a Genetic Disease.” Authored by Jeffrey Brosco, MD, and Diane Paul, PhD, the book addresses the history of neonatal screening for phenylketonuria, or PKU, a genetic disorder that physicians traditionally test for after pricking the heel of a newborn for a blood sample. Stormwater runoff

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency in July released the National Stormwater Calculator. The tool, which is available on the EPA’s website, allows the user to type in a U.S. location and calculate how much stormwater is collected annually from runoff in that area. The calculator is a part of the Stormwater Calculator and Climate Assessment Tool package in President Barack Obama’s Climate Action Plan. Global health

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in August published the online 2014 version of the “CDC Health Information for International Travel.” The guide, also known as “The Yellow Book” includes resources such as disease risk maps, needed vaccines before traveling abroad and malaria prevention information. Genetics

Omnigraphics in August published “Genetic Disorders Sourcebook, Fifth Edition.” The book provides information on specific disorders as well as information on topics such as prenatal testing and genetic counseling. For more information, visit www.omnigraphics.com

Oral health

The DentaQuest Institute in May launched its free Online Learning Center. The center is a resource for oral health professionals who want to network with fellow health workers, access webinars on best dental care practices and earn certified education units for completing courses on managing and preventing disease. Ethics

The Oxford University Press in September published “What Patients Teach: The Everyday Ethics of Health Care.” Authored by Larry Churchill, PhD, Joseph Fanning, PhD, and David Schenck, PhD, the book addresses the importance of a patient-physician relationship and how those interactions should be used to influence quality of care. Occupational health

Cornell University Press in July published “Hazard or Hardship: Crafting Global Norms on the Right to Refuse Unsafe Work.” Authored by Jeffrey Hilgert, PhD, the book addresses what improvements are needed worldwide to revamp policies related to worker safety and health so they are entitled to a safe work environment and are granted protections in situations where their work climate endangers their health. Mental health

The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration in August published “Medicaid Handbook: Interface with Behavioral Health Services.” The handbook addresses state Medicaid reimbursements for care related to mental health and substance abuse issues. Child health

The Johns Hopkins University Press in September published “Your Child’s Teeth.” Authored by Angie Best-Boss, RN, and Evelina Weidman Sterling, PhD, MPH, the book serves as a resource for parents on caring for their children’s teeth.
