Smoking cessation
The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center’s Tobacco Outreach Education Program in June launched the Tobacco-Free Teens App. The free app, which is compatible with the iPhone, iPad and iPod touch, contains a series of games that reinforce the negative effects of tobacco use. Maternal health
The Johns Hopkins University Press in November is expected to publish “The PKU Paradox: A Short History of a Genetic Disease.” Authored by Jeffrey Brosco, MD, and Diane Paul, PhD, the book addresses the history of neonatal screening for phenylketonuria, or PKU, a genetic disorder that physicians traditionally test for after pricking the heel of a newborn for a blood sample. Stormwater runoff
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency in July released the National Stormwater Calculator. The tool, which is available on the EPA’s website, allows the user to type in a U.S. location and calculate how much stormwater is collected annually from runoff in that area. The calculator is a part of the Stormwater Calculator and Climate Assessment Tool package in President Barack Obama’s Climate Action Plan. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in August published the online 2014 version of the “CDC Health Information for International Travel.” The guide, also known as “The Yellow Book” includes resources such as disease risk maps, needed vaccines before traveling abroad and malaria prevention information.
