HIV/AIDS

Oxford University Press in November published “The AIDS Generation: Stories of Survival and Resilience.” Authored by APHA member Perry Halkitis, PhD, MPH, MS, the book features stories from gay men who are HIV-positive and what they have gone through to manage their disease. Senior health

The Society for Public Health Education in October published the supplement “Fostering Engagement and Independence: Opportunities and Challenges for an Aging Society” from its Health Education and Behavior journal. The supplement features peer-reviewed articles covering topics on healthy aging such as programs that allow older adults to age in their homes and intergenerational initiatives that serve as a network to seniors. Health promotion

CreateSpace in October published “Health Promotion in the Workplace – Fourth Edition.” Authored by Michael O’Donnell, PhD, MPH, MBA, the book is a resource for people who have created or evaluated wellness programs in the workplace. For more information, visit www.createspace.com.

Child health

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in October published “Building Community Commitment for Safe, Stable, Nurturing Relationships and Environments.” Created by the Prevention Institute, the guide details the steps communities can take to keep children in safe and healthy spaces. Scientific research

The Royal Society in October announced its newest journal, Royal Society Open Science. The peer-reviewed journal will be an open access publication that encourages transparency in science. For more information, visit www.royalsociety.org.

Infectious disease

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in October launched the CDC Nowcast website to track the chikungunya virus. The website provides estimates of where the chikungunya virus may be based on factors such as airline travel patterns and existing geographic cases. Population health

Oxford University Press in September published “Social Determinants of Health: A Comparative Approach.” Authored by Alan Davidson, PhD, MA, the book looks at examples of health equity issues linked to socioeconomic status across Australia, Canada, the United Kingdom and the United States. Social work

Oxford University Press in October released “Social Work Live: Theory and Practice in Social Work Using Videos.” Authored by Carol Dorr, PhD, the resource is a combination of text, graphics and videos that demonstrate methods social workers can use to communicate with families, children and seniors. Chronic disease

New York University Press in February is expected to publish “Lighting Up: The Rise of Social Smoking on College Campuses.” Authored by Mimi Nichter, PhD, MA, the book looks into the reasons why smoking socially is popular among college and university young adults and what happens when these smokers graduate. Behavioral health

Oxford University Press in October published “Recovery Groups: A Guide to Creating, Leading and Working With Groups For Addictions and Mental Health Conditions.” Authored by Linda Farris Kurtz, DPA, MSW, the book covers background information on working with recovery groups, independent self-help groups and how to get participants linked to jobs, housing and other forms of support.
