Sharps named associate dean at Johns Hopkins School of Nursing

APHA member Phyllis Sharps, PhD, RN, FAAN, in April was appointed associate dean for community and global programs at Johns Hopkins University School of Nursing. Sharps, who is chair of the department of community and public health, will assume the position in January and will oversee the school's community programs, wellness center as well as the newly created Center for Global Nursing.

Fraumeni, Storz elected to American Academy of Arts and Sciences

APHA member Joseph Fraumeni, MD, MSPH, in April was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. Fraumeni is director of the National Cancer Institute's Division of Cancer Epidemiology and Genetics. Also elected was Gisela Storz, PhD, senior investigator and deputy director of the cell biology and metabolism program at the Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institute of Child Health and Human Development. The academy honors leaders in academia, business, public affairs, humanities and the arts.

Quade fills APHA seat on examiners board

APHA member Thomas Quade, MPH, MA, CPH, in June was named APHA's representative to the National Board of Public Health Examiners. Quade, who is also a member of APHA's Executive Board, serves as assistant health commissioner to Ohio's Summit County Public Health Department.

Complementary medicine center appoints four new council members

The National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine in June appointed APHA member James Lloyd Michener, MD, chair of the Department of Community and Family Medicine at Duke University, to its National Advisory Council for Complementary and Alternative Medicine. Also appointed were Brian Berman, MD; Daniel Cherkin, PhD; and David Kingston, PhD.

Somerman takes reins of dental research center

Martha J. Somerman, DDS, PhD, in April was appointed director of the National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research. Somerman, who is dean at the University of Washington School of Dentistry in Seattle, was to join the institute in August.

Wagner receives research award

Edward Wagner, MD, MPH, founder of Group Health Research Institute and director of the institute's MacColl Institute for Healthcare Innovation, in April was awarded the William B. Graham Prize for Health Services Research for his research on health care delivery methods. Administered by the Association of University Programs in Health Administration, the award honors health researchers.

Daulaire named WHO representative

Nils Daulaire, MD, MPH, in April was confirmed by the U.S. Senate as the United States’ representative to the executive board of the World Health Organization. Daulaire serves as director of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services’ Office of Global Health Affairs.

EPA honors leadership in asthma care

The Environmental Protection Agency in June honored three organizations for their commitment to improving the lives of people with asthma with its National Environmental Leadership Award. The Bronx-Lebanon Hospital Center in New York, the New York State Department of Health Center for Environmental Health and Missouri-based Centene Corporation were recognized at the agency's Communities in Action National Asthma Forum.

Madara to head American Medical Association

James Madara, MD, in June was named executive vice president and chief executive officer of the American Medical Association. Madara most recently served as a senior advisor at Leavitt Partners, a health care consulting firm.

Meyer joins Williams Institute

Ilan Meyer, PhD, in May was appointed Williams Senior Scholar of Public Policy at the Williams Institute, a research organization dedicated to the fields of sexual orientation and gender-related public policy. Meyer is a professor of clinical sociomedical sciences at Columbia University's Mailman School of Public Health.
