Social work

Columbia University Press in May published “Handbook of Social Work Practice with Vulnerable and Resilient Populations, Third Edition.” Edited by Alex Gitterman, EdD, MSW, the handbook includes new insights and research on the risk factors and resilience of disadvantaged populations, such as survivors of terrorism, military families and personnel and young men of color. Occupational health

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration in June published “Tree Care Work: Falls and Falling Object Hazards.” The hazard bulletin lists safety tips, such as having a certified arborist inspect a worksite and creating drop zones where there may be a risk for falling objects. Cardiovascular health

The Million Hearts Initiative in June launched the Healthy Eating and Lifestyle Resource Center. A partnership between the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and Eating Well magazine, the center allows users to search for healthy, low-sodium recipes based on factors such as serving size and preparation time and also includes nutritional facts. Injection safety

The Joint Commission in June published “Preventing Infection from the Misuse of Vials” as one of its Sentinel Event Alerts. The free alert informs health care workers about the infection risks, such as patients contracting hepatitis C, associated with improperly handling medical injections. Health policy

Columbia University Press in June published “Understanding Environmental Policy, Second Edition.” Authored by Steven Cohen, PhD, MA, the book’s second edition includes policy updates from President Barack Obama’s administration and case studies on environmental policy issues such as hydrofracking. Epidemiology

Oxford University Press in July published “Epidemiology Matters: A New Introduction to Methodological Foundations.” The book is authored by Sandro Galea, MD, MPH, DrPH, and Katherine Keyes Wild, PhD, MPH. Geared toward public health and medical students, the book addresses topics such as identifying populations and making associations between exposures and health indicators. Joint health

The American Association of Hip and Knee Surgeons in July announced its new medical journal, Arthroplasty Today. The publication will be a peer-reviewed, open-access journal featuring original articles on topics such as biomechanics and prosthetic design. For more information, visit www.aahks.org.

Mental health

The American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry in July released two publications focused on families preparing a young adult with a mental health issues for college. The titles are “Transitioning from High School to College with a Psychiatric Illness: Preparation” and “Starting College with a Psychiatric Illness.” The publications focus on topics such as identifying mental health professionals at the university level who can help manage care for incoming students. Environmental health

Oxford University Press in August published “Losing our Minds: How Environmental Pollution Impairs Human Intelligence and Mental Health.” Authored by Barbara Demeneix, PhD, DSc, the book addresses environmental hazards, such as pollution and its link to neurodevelopment disorders and loss of IQ. Child health

Columbia University Press in September published “Child Welfare for the 21st Century: A Handbook of Practices, Policies and Programs, Second Edition” Authored by Peg McCartt Hess, PhD, MA, and Gerald Mallon, DSW, MSW, the second edition covers issues such as child and adolescent safety and permanency for children and adolescents, as well as information on the Fostering Connections Act of 2008.
