APHA president receives honorary Doctor of Science degree
Camara Jones, MD, PhD, MPH, in May was awarded an honorary Doctor of Science degree from the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai. Jones is currently APHA president and a senior fellow at both the Satcher Health Leadership Institute and Cardiovascular Research Institute at the Morehouse School of Medicine.
Busky named next CEO of Infectious Diseases Society of America
Christopher Busky, MGA, CAE, in April was named the next CEO of the Infectious Diseases Society of America. Busky, who began his new role in July, previously served as executive vice president and chief operating officer of the Heart Rhythm Society.
Collins receives South Carolina Affiliate award
Neal Collins, JD, in May was named as the Douglas E. Bryant Legislator of the Year by the South Carolina Public Health Association. Collins is a member of the South Carolina House of Representatives. The South Carolina association, which is an APHA affiliate, recognized Collins for his work in building partnerships to reduce chronic disease.
Feit named director of SAMHSA division
Monica Feit, PhD, MPH, in March was named director of the Office of Policy, Planning and Innovation within the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration. Feit, who began her role in April, previously served as acting director of the Office of Policy, Planning and Innovation.
Gillman selected as leader for NIH Program
Matthew Gillman, MD, in April was selected as program director for the Environmental Influences on Child Health Outcomes Program of the National Institutes of Health. Gillman, who began his role in July, was previously a professor of population medicine at Harvard Medical School and a nutrition professor at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health.
Glimcher named president, CEO of cancer organization
Laurie Glimcher, MD, in June was named president and CEO of the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute. Previously, Glimcher served as the Irene Heinz Given professor of immunology at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health.
North Carolina group receives consumer protection award
The Food, Lodging and Institution Section of Wake County, North Carolina’s Department of Environmental Services in June was selected as the recipient of the 2016 Samuel J. Crumbine Consumer Protection Award for Excellence in Food Protection. APHA is one of many health organizations that supports the Crumbine award.
Nagoshiner appointed Tennessee Department of Health chief of staff
Valerie Nagoshiner, MBA, in May was appointed as chief of staff for the Tennessee Department of Health. Nagoshiner previously served as the Tennessee Department of Health’s assistant commissioner for legislative affairs.
Poulakidas awarded Illinois clinical excellence award
Stathis Poulakidas, MD, FACS, in May was awarded a Clinical Excellence Award from the Illinois Department of Public Health and the Illinois Emergency Medical Services for Children program. The award is a category of the Ron W. Lee, MD, Excellence in Pediatric Care Awards. Poulakidas is the chair of burn and wound services at John H. Stroger Jr. Hospital in Chicago.
Thio appointed to Joint Commission board
Desmond Thio, MD, PhD/DBA, MBA, in May was appointed to the board of directors for the Joint Commission Resources Inc. Thio is the CEO at the Delta Health Hospital and Delta Health Clinic in Shanghai.
