Community health

In May, Island Press published “Precision Community Health,” by APHA member Bechara Choucair, MD, senior vice president and chief health officer at Kaiser Permanente. Choucair writes about his experiences as Chicago health commissioner and how his strategy of addressing the underlying causes of medical diseases can be used to improve the health of communities. Human rights

Oxford University Press released “Foundations of Global Health and Human Rights” in July. Edited by Lawrence Gostin, JD, and Benjamin Mason Meier, PhD, JD, LLM, the book explores the ways human rights laws can advance health and well-being and provides insight into human rights challenges facing the world. COVID-19 mapping

The Milken Institute launched a new COVID-19 Community Explorer tool in June. The tool combines publicly available data with interactive maps to highlight the communities most impacted by COVID-19. For more information, visit https://milkeninstitute.org.

Climate change

The National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences in July launched the Climate Change and Human Health Literature Portal. The open-access online portal curates over 10,000 unique, peer-reviewed research resources on climate change and human health. For more information, visit www.niehs.nih.gov.

Pediatric medicine

The American Academy of Pediatrics in July launched “Pediatrics on Call,” a weekly podcast. The show covers emerging research on pediatric medicine and features pediatricians discussing child and adolescent health topics. For more information, visit www.aap.org.

Research ethics

Johns Hopkins University Press in June published “The Morehouse Model” by Ronald Braithwaite, PhD, MS. The book details the Morehouse School of Medicine’s approach to community research, with emphasis on improving community health and working to reduce health inequities for communities of color. COVID-19 spread

The National Academies’ Societal Experts Action Network in June published “Evaluating Data Types: A Guide for Decision Makers Using Data to Understand the Extent and Spread of COVID-19.” The guide connects experts on social and behavioral science with decisionmakers responding to COVID-19 to help them answer questions and better understand its spread in their communities. Mental health

Columbia University Press in June published “The Diagnostic System: Why the Classification of Psychiatric Disorders Is Necessary, Difficult and Never Settled,” by Jason Schnittker, PhD, MA. The book offers analysis of the American Psychiatric Association’s “Diagnostic and Statistical Manual” and provides insight into the challenges of classifying psychiatric disorders.
