Pollack named chair
Craig Pollack MD, MHS, was named inaugural endowed chair at the Johns Hopkins Schools of Nursing and Public Health in September. Pollack is an associate professor in the Department of Health Policy and Management at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health and in the Department of Epidemiology at the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine.
Fauci receives award
In September, the National Academy of Medicine announced Anthony Fauci, MD, as the recipient of the 2020 Gustav O. Lienhard Award for Advancement of Health Care for his leadership during the COVID-19 pandemic. Fauci is the director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, where he leads infectious disease and policy research.
Betz, Anderson and Backus honored with award
The founders of two suicide prevention programs were honored with the Acute Care Suicide Prevention Award in September. Stephen Anderson, MD, FACEP, and Nancy Backus were recognized for READY — Real Emergency Aid Depends on You — an Auburn, Washington, program that provides basic skills for emergency mental health situations and crises. Emmy Betz, MD, MPH, FACEP, was honored for Lock to Live, a tool that helps people find the best storage option for firearms, medications and other potentially harmful household items. The award was given by the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention and the American College of Emergency Physicians.
Stefanou named administrator
The U.S. Department of Agriculture announced in August that Spiro Stefanou, PhD, was chosen to lead the Economic Research Service as its administrator. Stefanou was an economics professor at the University of Florida’s Institute of Food and Agriculture.
Hinshaw receives award
Stephen Hinshaw, PhD, received the National Academy of Medicine’s 2020 Rhoda and Bernard Sarnat International Prize in Mental Health in September. Hinshaw is a professor of psychology at the University of California-Berkeley, where he served as department chair from 2004 to 2011.
Trent named professor of American health
Maria Trent, MD, MPH, was appointed by the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health as a Bloomberg professor of American health in the Department of Population, Family and Reproductive Health in September. Trent serves as the key investigator on multiple research projects funded by the National Institutes of Health.
Augustine named officer and director
Erika Fullwood Augustine, MD, MS, was announced as inaugural associate chief science officer and director of the Clinical Trials Unit at the Kennedy Krieger Institute. She served as associate director of the Center for Health and Technology, co-director of the Hereditary Ataxia Clinic and co-director of the University of Rochester Batten Center.
Rosekind named distinguished scholar
Mark Rosekind, PhD, MS, MPhil, joined the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health as a distinguished policy scholar in September. Rosekind served as administrator of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration from 2014-2017 and now serves as chief safety innovation officer at Zoox.
