Furr-Holden named dean
APHA member Debra Furr-Holden, PhD, was named dean of New York University’s School of Global Public Health in March. Furr-Holden is associate dean for public health integration at Michigan State University and director of the Flint Center for Health Equity Solutions. She will start her position at NYU in July.
Murthy named advisor to U.N. commission
APHA member Padmini Murthy, MD, MPH, MS, CHES, served as a non-government advisor during the U.N.’s 66th session of the Commission on the Status of Women in March. Murthy is a professor and global health director at the School of Health Sciences and Practice at New York Medical College.
Pollack named chair at Johns Hopkins
APHA member Keshia Pollack Porter, PhD, MPH, was named the chair of the Health Policy and Management Department at Johns Hopkins University’s Bloomberg School of Public Health in February. Porter previously served as vice dean of faculty.
Mays, Eisenberg appointed to policy center
In February, Vickie Mays, PhD, MSPH and Daniel Eisenberg, PhD were appointed to the Center for Health Policy Research at the University of California-Los Angeles. Mays was named senior fellow, focusing on areas of mental health disorders in minority populations, and Eisenberg will serve as director of the center’s mental health program.
Graham earns science award
In January, the National Academy of Sciences announced that Barney Graham, MD, PhD was awarded the John J. Carty Award for the Advancement of Science. Graham, a former National Institutes of Health scientist, received the award for his work in vaccine development. His work focuses on the integration of nanoparticle and mRNA technologies in vaccine design.
Foo wins leadership award
The Association for Community Affiliated Plans awarded Mary Anne Foo, MPH, with its Leadership in Advocacy Award in February. Foo is founder and executive director of the Orange County Asian and Pacific Islander Community Alliance. Foo has worked on addressing disparities in social services and health care.
Lofgren named CEO of health system
In February, University of Oklahoma Health announced that Richard Lofgren, MD, MPH, FACP will serve as inaugural CEO of the health system. Lofgren will lead OU Health, the state’s only integrated academic health facility.
Brooks named administrator
Eric Brooks, MD, was appointed regional medical director for Louisiana’s Department of Health in February. He will oversee the river parishes, which are part of Region 3 and include seven parishes.
Melrose reorganizes health department
Melrose, Massachusetts’ health department has a new name and vision. In February, Mayor Paul Brodeur announced a reorganization of the city’s health agency, now known as the Melrose Health and Human Services Department. Anthony Chui, MPH, remains director of the department and Emily Hatchouel is now public health specialist. The department is also adding its first full-time community social worker.
