  • What’s your vision for IHS in the new millennium? And what are your top priorities in addressing American Indian and Alaska Native health?
  • The communities that IHS serves often suffer a disproportionate burden of chronic disease and tend to have shorter life spans than fellow Americans. Are we making significant progress on these fronts? What more must be done to close the gaps?
  • How critical are IHS’ Urban Indian Health Programs to overall American Indian and Alaska Native health? And what kind of funding is needed to prepare for the programs’ future needs?
  • How has self-determination — or tribes taking over the administration of formerly IHS-administered programs — improved American Indian and Alaska Native health? And does IHS foresee expanding the initiative?
  • According to IHS, suicide is the second leading cause of death for American Indian youth ages 15 to 24. What are the contributors to this unfortunate statistic and what needs to be done — or what is already being done — to reverse this trend?
  • Can national health reform help improve health and close the health disparity gaps facing American Indian and Alaska Native communities?
  • What role do you see organizations such as APHA playing to help improve the health of native populations?
