NIH cookbook

The National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute in February launched “Keep the Beat: Deliciously Healthy Family Meals.” The free cookbook aims to enhance children’s activity and nutrition. The book’s recipes follow the federal Dietary Guidelines for Americans and adhere to NHLBI’s Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension diet. The recipes, including nutritional analyses, are available online at http://hp2010.nhlbihin.net/healthyeating/default.aspx.

Childhood diabetes resource

The National Diabetes Education Program in February updated “Helping the Student with Diabetes Succeed: A Guide for School Personnel.” Revised to reflect the latest science, the guidebook explains how school staff members play a role in helping children manage their diabetes and tells how to prepare for diabetes-related emergencies. The free guide is online at www.yourdiabetesinfo.org.

Smoking cessation tools

The Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids in February launched a redesigned website and created a new blog. The website — now easier for users to navigate and share information — includes a library of fact sheets and a section that monitors the tobacco industry. The blog monitors developments on the tobacco front. The tools are available at www.tobaccofreekids.org.

Eating disorders sourcebook

Omnigraphics in January published “Eating Disorders Sourcebook, Third Edition,” a basic resource for information about eating disorders. For more information, visit www.omnigraphics.com.

Respirator video

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration in February released “Respiratory Protection for Health Care Workers,” a training video that explains how to use respirators and provides protocols to protect workers from airborne hazards. For more information, visit www.osha.gov.

Workplace violence tool

The Emergency Nurses Association in February released “ENA Workplace Violence Toolkit,” a resource to help hospital emergency departments prevent and respond to violence. The toolkit includes action plans, evacuation protocols, evaluation tools, sample policies and research materials. The toolkit is available free at www.ena.org/ienr/ViolenceToolKit/Documents/toolkitpg1.htm.

Infant sleep resource

Keeping Babies Safe in February launched “Safe Sleep for Babies,” a series of educational videos to help new parents create and maintain safe sleeping environments for their babies and eradicate preventable death and injury. The videos are online at www.keepingbabiessafe.org.

Nutrition guidebook

Harvard Medical School in February released an updated version of “Healthy Eating: A Guide to the New Nutrition.” Online at www.health.harvard.edu/special_health_reports/healthy_eating.htm, the guidebook delivers information on the link between food and health.
