Levi appointed chair of advisory group

APHA member Jeffrey Levi, PhD, in April was appointed chair of the U.S. Advisory Group on Prevention, Health Promotion and Integrative and Public Health. The advisory group provides policy and program recommendations to the National Prevention, Health Promotion and Public Health Council.

Bakers honored by Johns Hopkins School of Public Health

APHA member Susan Baker, MPH, and Timothy Baker, PhD, in April were honored with a portrait representing their careers in public health service. Susan Baker is a health policy professor and researcher. Timothy Baker is an international health professor as well as assistant dean of the Department of Health Administration.

Brazos Valley receives achievement award

Brazos Valley in Texas in April received an Achievement Award from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Building Healthy Communities for Active Aging National Recognition Program. The community received support from the Texas A&M Health Science Center and was recognized for its approach to implementing growth and active aging in neighborhoods by creating a comprehensive plan for more suitable walking areas for people of all ages. APHA is a supporter of the program.

Robert Wood Johnson Foundation honors article

The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation in February named an article on, “Measuring the Impact of Public Health Policy” one of the most influential articles of 2010. Co-authored by APHA member Ross Brownson, PhD, Rachel Seiler and Amy Eyler, PhD, the article was published in the July 2010 issue of Preventing Chronic Disease and focused on public health policy.

Osberg receives alumni service award

Brian Osberg, MPH, in February received the University of Minnesota Alumni Service Award. He was honored for his commitment and leadership roles in alumni services at the University of Minnesota School of Public Health, as well as his role in the Minnesota Department of Human Services.

Grant awarded to Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health

The Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health in March was awarded a grant to renovate and modernize its laboratory. The grant was awarded by the National Center for Research Resources and includes $15 million from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act.

Cauley lauded for mentoring

Jane Cauley, PhD, an epidemiology professor at the University of Pittsburgh Graduate School of Public Health, in April received the “2011 Provost’s Award for Excellence in Mentoring.”

Bauchner takes reins of JAMA

Howard Bauchner, MD, in July will become editor-in-chief of the Journal of the American Medical Association. Bauchner, a professor of community health sciences and pediatrics at Boston University School of Public Health and School of Medicine, has a goal of expanding the journal’s influence on the Internet.

Zelman receives faculty endowment award

William Zelman, PhD, in March received the Greenburg Alumni Endowment Award for Excellence in teaching, research and service from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill Gillings School of Public Health.

Prevention Institute receives award

The Prevention Institute in April received the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s 2011 Injury Prevention and Control Health Impact Award, which recognizes efforts to advance the field of injury prevention.

Public service award goes to Berg

Jeremy Berg, PhD, in April received the 2001 Public Service Award from the American Chemical Society. Berg, director of the National Institute of General Medical Sciences, received the honor for his contribution to public service and public policy in the field of chemical sciences.

Morley lauded for educational excellence

John Morley, MB, in April received the James Pattee Award for Excellence in Education from the American Medical Directors Association. Morley, editor-in-chief of the group’s journal, received the honor for his contributions to the educational goals of the association.

New Jersey health center launched

The Department of Health and Senior Services in New Jersey in March launched the New Jersey Center for Health Innovations. The new health center harnesses creative practices to change the quality of health care in New Jersey. The center plans to assemble group meetings to discuss approaches to improve health care delivery, management of health care information and new research and technologies.

Kolsky receives alumni award

Peter Kolsky, PhD, in March received the Barr Distinguished Alumni Award. The honor was presented by the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill Gillings School of Global Public Health in honor of Kolsky’s contributions to public health in the public and private sectors.

National Eye Institute honors communities

The National Eye Institute in April announced winners of the 2011 Healthy Vision Community Awards. The 15 recipients are communities honored for their commitment to making eye health and vision priority issues.
