The National Council for Behavioral Health in September released the “Suicide in America” infographic to coincide with Suicide Prevention Week. The Gerontological Society of America and Age UK in September published the “Public Policy and Aging Report.” Authored by Dominic Abrams, PhD, a University of Kent social psychology professor, and Hannah Swift, PhD, a University of Kent research associate, the publication covers age discrimination in factors such as housing and employment. The National Institutes of Health’s Office of Behavioral and Social Sciences Research in January began the blog The Connector, which will be a resource for studying and researching behaviors to prevent people from engaging in unhealthy habits such as smoking. The blog, led by Robert Kaplan, PhD, director of the Behavioral and Social Sciences Research Office, will feature podcasts, videos, information on trainings and more. Nutrition
The U.S. Department of Agriculture in September published “How Economic Conditions Affect Participation in USDA Nutrition Assistance Programs.” Authored by USDA agricultural economists Kenneth Hanson, PhD, and Victor Oliveira, MS, the report looks at the effects of economic hardships in the U.S. and the number of Americans who relied on food assistance programs such as the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program. Respiratory health
The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration in November published the report “State Estimates of Adolescent Cigarette Use and Perceptions of Risk of Smoking: 2009 and 2010.” The report shows a drop in teen cigarette use among 12- to 17-year-olds in 41 states between 2002-2010 and calls for states to continue to push teens to be smoke-free.
