APHA members elected to NAM

APHA members Stefano Bertozzi, MD, PhD; Maureen Lichtveld, MD, MPH; Bernice Pescosolido, PhD, and James Roth, DVM, PhD, in October were elected as members of the National Academy of Medicine. Bertozzi is the dean of the School of Public Health and professor of health and policy management at the University of California-Berkeley. Lichtveld is the professor and chair of the department of global environmental health sciences at Tulane University School of Public Health and Tropical Medicine. Pescosolido is a distinguished professor of sociology at Indiana University. Roth is the Clarence Hartley Covault distinguished professor and director of the Center for Food Security and Public Health within the College of Veterinary Medicine at Iowa State University.

Birnbaum receives NIEHS environmental health award

APHA member Linda Birnbaum, PhD, in October was awarded the first Champion of Environmental Health Research Award from the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences. As director of NIEHS and the National Toxicology Program, Birnbaum was recognized for her leadership and contributions on endocrine disruption and cancer and the risks substances pose to environmental health.

Barcelona chosen as Jonas Policy Scholar

Veronica Barcelona de Mendoza, PhD, MSN, MPH, RN, APHN-BC, in August was selected to participate in the American Academy of Nursing’s Jonas Policy Scholars Program. Mendoza is a public health nurse and a postdoctoral associate with the Yale School of Nursing.

Fauci wins Research!America award

Anthony Fauci, MD, in March 2017 is slated to receive the 2017 Legacy award from Research!America. Fauci, director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, was recognized for his innovative work in HIV/AIDS research and many other disease areas. Fauci serves as chief of the NIAID Laboratory of Immunoregulation and as an advisor for the White House and the Department of Health and Human Services on global AIDS issues and initiatives to prevent emerging infectious threats.

Goff selected as director of Cardiovascular Sciences at NIH

David Goff Jr., MD, PhD, in September was named director of the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute’s Division of Cardiovascular Sciences. The former chair of the Coronary Artery Risk Development in Young Adults Study Steering Committee, Goff’s past work with NHLBI has focused on cardiovascular risk in diabetes and systolic blood pressure intervention cohort studies.

Marshall named Michigan public health agency’s medical director

Jessie Kimbrough Marshall, MD, MPH, was named Washtenaw County Public Health’s new medical director in July 2016. Marshall works as an adult hospital medicine physician with the University of Michigan Health System.

McKenzie selected as new director for OSHA department

Dean McKenzie in September became the Occupational Safety and Health Administration’s new director of the Directorate of Construction. McKenzie, who previously served as director of OSHA’s Office of Construction Services has worked on OSHA projects such as the Stand Down to Prevent Falls in Construction campaign.

Sebelius joins Solera Health Advisory Board

Kathleen Sebelius, MPA, in September was appointed to the Solera Health advisory board. The former secretary of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services and previous co-chair of the Aspen Health Strategy Group, is an expert on both national and international health issues and has worked for health care reform. Sebelius is working with Solera Health to help integrate chronic disease prevention and management solutions and create a model that will meet the health needs of Americans.

Verghese awarded National Humanities Medal

Abraham Verghese, MD, in September was chosen as the recipient of the National Humanities Medal by President Barack Obama and the National Council on the Humanities. Anauthor and physician, Verghese is a professor of medicine at the Stanford School of Medicine, vice chair of Stanford’s Department of Medicine and director of Stanford’s interdisciplinary center, Presence.
