Genetics

St. Martin’s Press in March published “Mercies in Disguise: A Story of Hope, a Family’s Genetic Destiny and the Science that Rescued Them.” Written by New York Times science reporter Gina Kolata, MS, the book details the story of the Baxley family’s battle with kuru, a rare neurodegenerative disease. Kolata intertwines the disease’s origin in cannibalistic tribes, the family’s dynamics and the genetic diagnostic testing. For more information, visit http://us.macmillan.com.

Pharmaceutical pricing

Adis, a subset of Springer, in February published “Pharmaceutical Prices in the 21st Century,” an overview of global pharmaceutical pricing policies edited by Zaheer-Ud-Din Babar, PhD. Babar assesses the need for new medicines to combat antibiotic resistance, prevent new diseases and fit the needs of increasing populations and how such needs affect drug prices worldwide. Infectious disease

The University of Minnesota School of Public Health in March released “Deadliest Enemy: Our War Against Killer Germs.” Written by Michael Osterholm, PhD, MPH, the book details the challenges of public health preparedness in the midst of global pandemics and outbreaks of infectious diseases. Osterholm, director of the university’s Center for Infectious Disease Research and Policy, also advises governments and other organizations on disease outbreaks and bioterrorism. Palliative care

Avery in March published “Extreme Measures: Finding a Better Path to the End of Life” by Jessica Zitter, MD. The book addresses the need to increase palliative care awareness within medical communities. Suicide

Elsevier in February published “Explaining Suicide: Patterns, Motivations and What Notes Reveal,” edited by Cheryl Meyer, PhD, JD; Taronish Irani, PhD, MA; Katherine Hermes, PhD, JD, MA; and Betty Yung, PhD. The book is an analysis of suicides across many ages between 2000 and 2009 in southwestern Ohio. The book recognizes top motivations for suicide, risk factors and tactics for suicide prevention. Scientific communication

World Scientific Publishing in February released “Communicating Science: A Practical Guide for Engineers and Physical Scientists.” Written by Raymond Boxman, PhD, MS, and Edith Boxman, MBA, the textbook seeks to help engineers and physical scientists communicate their work with public and governmental agencies, businesses and the general public. The textbook also includes chapters on creating curricula vitae and job hunting, as well as a chapter on translating scientific English. For more information, visit https://www.worldscientific.com.

Disaster management

Routlege in March released “Disaster Health Management: A Primer for Students and Practitioners,” edited by Gerry FitzGerald, MD; Mike Tarrant, MA; Peter Aitken; and Marie Fredricksen. The guide, written for doctors, nurses, paramedics and other health professionals, covers disaster management approaches. The text uses many case studies, most based in Australia, as examples. Medical research

Springer Healthcare in February launched Medicine Matters, a new website that allows physicians and health care professionals to access free journal articles and resources for better diagnoses and treatments. Medicine Matters, which currently focuses on diabetes, will release new sites for oncology, rheumatology and cardiology throughout 2017 and 2018.
