Environmental policy

CRC Press in October published Environmental Policy and Public Health Second Edition. Written by APHA members Barry Johnson, PhD, and Maureen Lichtveld, MD, MPH, the book covers environmental policies in the U.S. and internationally as well as emerging environmental hazards. Health care

Oxford University Press in January published “Children and Environmental Toxins: What Everyone Needs to Know.” Written by Philip Landrigan and Mary Landrigan, the reference guide covers chemical toxins that pose a threat to children at home and in the environment as well as advice for reducing their risk. Professional development

Sigma Theta Tau International in September published “A Nurse’s Step-by-Step Guide to Academic Promotion and Tenure.” Written by Constance McIntosh, EdD, MBA, RN; David McIntosh, PhD; and Cynthia Thomas, EdD, MS, RNC; the resource guide outlines practical steps for nursing and other academics seeking promotion or tenure. Alcohol treatment

The National Institute on Alcohol Abuse in October released an online resource to help people find alcohol treatment. The Treatment and Addiction Navigator uses the step-by-step process that NIAAA staff use to help people find proper treatment. For more information, visit www.niaaa.nih.gov.

Pregnancy

The Indiana State Department of Health in December released an app to help users learn about pregnancy and prenatal care. Liv includes more than 130 articles, quizzes, checklists and videos as well as information to contact health care providers and resources. For more information, visit http://www.in.gov/isdh.

Bariatric surgery

Penn Medicine in December released an app to help patients undergoing bariatric surgery in the health system’s bariatric surgery program. Penn Life Gained allows users to interact with their care team and help them follow their progress before and after surgery. For more information, visit www.pennmedicine.org.

Social determinants of health

The American Academy of Family Physicians in January released a toolkit to help physicians screen patients based on social determinants of health. The toolkit from AAFP’s EveryONE Project includes screening questions and tools and resources to help family physicians make decisions about patients’ health based on social determinants of health. Overcoming adversity

Roman & Littlefield in January published “Life’s Bulldozer Moments: How Adversity Leads to Success in Life and Business.” Written by Tivity Health CEO Donato Traumoto, the book serves as a guide for overcoming adversity interwoven with insights about Traumoto’s experiences as a health care leader.
