Farmer receives public welfare award

APHA member Paul Farmer, MD, PhD, in April was honored with the National Academy of Sciences’ Public Welfare Medal at the organization’s annual meeting. Farmer is the co-founder and chief strategist of Partners in Health.

Sharps receives diversity in nursing award

APHA member Phyllis Sharps, PhD, RN, FAAN, in January received Modern Healthcare’s Diversity in Nursing Award. Sharps is professor and associate dean for community programs and initiatives at the Johns Hopkins School of Nursing.

Gracia named executive vice president, COO at Trust for America’s Health

APHA member J. Nadine Gracia, MD, MSCE, in January was named the executive vice president and chief operating officer at Trust for America’s Health. She previously served as deputy assistant secretary for minority health and director of the Office of Minority Health at the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.

Gawande receives public opinion award

Atul Gawande, MD, MPH, MA, in March received Research!America’s Isadore Rosenfeld Award for Impact on Public Opinion at the organization’s advocacy awards dinner. Gawande is a professor in the Department of Health Policy and Management at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health.

Gremminger named senior director of federal relations

Shawn Gremminger, MPP, in March was named the senior director of federal relations at Families USA. Gremminger previously served as director of legislative affairs at America’s Essential Hospitals.

Bird named influential public health alumnus

Michael Bird, MPH, MSW, in April was honored by the University of California-Berkeley School of Public Health as one of the 75 most influential public health alumni over the course of the school’s 75 years. Bird is a former president of APHA.

W.K. Kellogg Foundation announces new hires

The W.K. Kellogg Foundation in January announced several new hires. Mary Cohen, MA, was named vice president for communications, Arelis Diaz, MA, was promoted to director of the office of the president and Cynthia Muller, MBA, was promoted to director of mission investments.

USPSTF announces new members

The U.S. Preventive Services Task Force in February announced two new members to serve four-year terms: Aaron Caughey, MD, PhD, MPH, MPP; and Martha Kubik, PhD, RN. Caughey is professor and chair of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology and associate dean for women’s health research and policy at Oregon Health & Science University. Kubik is the director of the Department of Nursing at the Temple University College of Public Health and the David R. Devereaux endowed professor in nursing.

Wackowski receives public health research award

Olivia Wackowski, PhD, MH, in March was honored with the Association of Schools and Programs of Public Health’s Early Career Public Health Research Award during the organization’s annual meeting. Wackowski is assistant professor in the Department of Social and Behavioral Health Sciences at the Rutgers School of Public Health.
