Barbot appointed health commissioner

APHA member Oxiris Barbot, MD, in December was appointed commissioner of New York’s Department of Health and Mental Hygiene. Barbot had been its acting commissioner since the retirement of her predecessor earlier that year. Prior to that, she had been medical director for New York City’s schools, and from 2010 to 2014, she was Baltimore’s health commissioner.

Wiesman appointed co-chair of HIV/AIDs council

APHA member John Wiesman, DrPH, MPH, in December was appointed co-chair of the Presidential Advisory Council on HIV/AIDS. Wiesman is the secretary of health for the Washington State Department of Health.

Dobbs becomes state health officer

APHA member Thomas Dobbs, MD, MPH, in December was appointed health officer of the Mississippi State Department of Health. Dobbs had been Mississippi’s deputy state health officer.

Bowie joins Johns Hopkins

APHA member Janice Bowie, PhD, MPH, in December was named director of the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health’s Doctor of Public Health Program. Bowie had spent over 15 years at the Department of Health in Virginia, holding several positions, including director of the Division of Chronic Diseases.

Baezconde-Garbanati named associate director

APHA member Lourdes Baezconde-Garbanati, PhD, MPH, in November was appointed associate director of community outreach and engagement at the University of Southern California Norris Comprehensive Cancer Center. Baezconde-Garbanati is a faculty member at the Keck School of Medicine and director of the Center for Health Equity in the Americas.

Marshall to serve on national committee

APHA member Nandi Marshall, DrPH, MPH, CHES, has been selected to serve on the U.S. Breastfeeding Committee. Marshall, an assistant professor at Georgia Southern University, will be part of the committee to enhance membership and build community for women who breastfeed children.

Blaszczyk receives pharmacy award

Amie Blaszczyk, PharmD, CGP, BCPS, FASCP, in December was given the 2018 Armon Neel Senior Care Pharmacist award by the American Society for Consultant Pharmacists. Blaszczyk is an associate professor at the School of Pharmacy at the Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center.

Zullig new chair-elect

Keith Zullig, MSPH, PhD, in November was named chair-elect of the Delta Omega Honorary Society. Zullig leads the Department of Social and Behavioral Sciences at the public health school at West Virginia University.

Pastides named chair

Harris Pastides, PhD, MPH, in December was named chair of the board of directors of the South Carolina Institute of Medicine and Public Health. Since 2008, Pastides has been president of the University of South Carolina.

Duggan named editor

Christopher Duggan, MD, MPH, in November was named editor of the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition. Duggan is a pediatrics professor at Harvard Medical School and a professor in the Department of Nutrition and the Department of Global Health and Population at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health.

Goldstein named vice chancellor

Steve Goldstein, MD, PhD, in December was named vice chancellor for health affairs at the University of California-Irvine. Goldstein was previously dean and chief diversity officer at the Stritch School of Medicine at Loyola University Chicago, where he was also a professor of pediatrics and cell and molecular physiology.

Rosch appointed dean

Laura Rosch, DO, CS, MS, FACOI, in December was appointed dean of the College of Osteopathic Medicine at the Kansas City University of Medicine and Biosciences in Joplin. Her previous position was chair of the Department of Internal Medicine at Midwestern University’s College of Osteopathic Medicine in Downer’s Grove, Illinois.

Mattacola appointed dean

Carl Mattacola, PhD, ATC, FNATA, in December was appointed dean of the University of North Carolina’s School of Health and Human Sciences in Greensboro. His previous position was associate dean of the Office of Academic and Faculty Affairs of the College of Health Sciences at the University of Kentucky in Lexington.

Diamond receives award

Michael Diamond, MD, PhD, in December won the 2019 Stanley J. Korsmeyer Award, given out by the American Society for Clinical Investigations. Diamond, an immunology professor at the Washington University School of Medicine, was honored for his contributions to better understanding the molecular basis of disease caused by RNA viruses.
