EPA appoints committee members
In May, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency appointed 20 new members to the Children’s Health Protection Advisory Committee. Among them are APHA members Natasha DeJarnett, PhD; Katie Huffling, MS, RN; Linda McCauley, PhD; Daniel Price, PhD; Perry E. Sheffield, MD, MPH; Derek Shendell, MPH; Veena Singla, PhD; and Kristie Trousdale, MPH. Returning to the committee is APHA member José Cordero, MD, MPH.
Cleveland appointed director
John Cleveland, PhD, in April was appointed director and executive vice president of the Moffitt Cancer Center. Cleveland previously worked at the National Cancer Institute.
Geller begins as president
Jeffrey Geller, MD, MPH, in April began his one-year term as president of the American Psychiatric Association. His term began at the conclusion of APA’s Virtual Highlights Meeting. Geller is a professor at the University of Massachusetts Medical School and staff psychiatrist at Worcester Recovery Center and Hospital.
Murthy wins Vilcek-Gold award
Vivek Murthy, MD, in May was awarded the Vilcek-Gold Award for Humanism in Healthcare for his work on the opioid crisis and promotion of community-centered care. Murthy served as U.S. surgeon general from 2013 to 2017.
Brown named interim dean
David Savitz, PhD, in May was named interim dean of the Brown University School of Public Health. Savitz, a professor of epidemiology at the school, will hold the position from July 1 to Aug. 31. Ashish K. Jha, MD, MPH, director of Harvard’s Global Health Institute, begins as the school’s new dean on Sept. 1.
APHA welcomes new staff
Bob Ensinger, MPA, in April joined APHA’s Strategic Communications Department as director. Alyssa Holland in May joined APHA as continuing education services coordinator.
