ASPPH announces new leadership
On Dec. 10, the Association of Schools and Programs of Public Health announced new appointments to its chief leadership team. The association appointed APHA member Linda Alexander, EdD, to chief academic officer; Tim Leshan, MPA, as chief extremal relations and advocacy officer; and Linda Taliaferro, MHA, as chief operating officer. Leshan and Taliaferro assumed their roles in January and will be joined by Alexander in April.
Johnson leads HRSA
The Health Resources and Services Administration announced in December that Carole Johnson, MA, is the agency’s new administrator. Johnson most recently served on the White House COVID-19 Response Team as testing coordinator and commissioner of the New Jersey Department of Human Services. Johnson previously served the Obama administration as the White House Policy Council’s public health lead. Her appointment began in January.
BioAdvances appoints new editors-in-chief
The Federation of American Societies for Experimental Biology appointed Crislyn D’Souza-Schorey, PhD, and Yung Hou Wong, PhD, as editors-in-chief of FASEB BioAdvances. Their tenure began on Jan. 1. The international, open-access journal was launched in 2019.
Gawande confirmed to USAID leadership
Atul Gawande, MD, MPH, was confirmed by the U.S. Senate as as assistant administrator of the U.S. Agency for International Development’s Bureau for Global Health in December. Nominated in July 2021, Gawande, a professor of health policy and management at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health and author, will contribute to work to prevent child and maternal deaths, control the HIV/AIDS epidemic and combat infectious diseases.
Graphic Medicine series adds new editors
In December, Penn State University Press announced it would add a pair of new editors for its Graphic Medicine series. Juliet McMullin, PhD, MA, and Brain Callendar, MD, join Susan Merrill Squier, PhD, to lead the book series. Graphic Medicine is a collection of books that feature comics to communicate information on health and medicine.
Babington, Hernandez join USDA
The U.S. Department of Agriculture announced several new key staff additions in December. They include Sean Babington, MPM, as senior adviser for climate in the office of the secretary, and Cecilia Hernandez, MPA, as designated federal officer for the USDA Equity Commission, which advises the agency secretary on barriers to inclusion, systemic discrimination and other issues.
Task force adds new members
In January, the U.S. Preventive Task Force announced four new members: David Chelmow, MD; Tumaini Rucker Coker, MD, MBA; Carlos Roberto Jaén, MD, PhD, MS, FAAFP; and John Ruiz, PhD. Their terms last until 2026.
APHA welcomes new staff
APHA recently welcomed Victoria Bortfeld, MPH, and Katherine Catalano, MS, to its staff. Bortfeld, who joined in January, is the new program manager of environmental health, and Catalano, who joined in December, is the new deputy director of the Association’s Center for Climate Health and Equity.
