APHA 2022 will provide a wealth of educational opportunities for public health professionals. Participants will be able to learn from colleagues, earn continuing education credits and take home skills they can apply to their work.
APHA’s 2022 Annual Meeting and Expo, to be held Nov. 6-9 in Boston, will feature educational institutes, labs, scientific sessions and more.
The events kick off with APHA’s Annual Meeting Learning Institutes, which will provide in-depth education. Held Nov. 5-6, the half- and full-day institutes offer practical information that professionals can use in their everyday work, such as turning health data into visual information and designing meaningful virtual trainings.
Health professionals with an interest in research can sign up for Learning Institutes on scientific writing, design thinking or practitioner research. For those who want to become certified in public health, a day-long institute will help them prepare for the CPH exam. In all, a dozen Learning Institute courses will be offered.
The courses go beyond regular Annual Meeting sessions by offering hands-on education. At a Saturday, Nov. 5, course on applying health literacy concepts to patient education materials, for example, participants will be able “to apply what they’ve learned directly to a document of their choosing,” such as something they currently use for patient education, according to Jacqueline Gilberto Grace, MPH, MCHES, who will be one of the instructors.
“In a nutshell, attendees will gain skills that will enable them to simplify written health communication,” Grace told The Nation’s Health. “Doing so has many benefits, chief among them is helping their patients — and anyone involved in their care — better understand health topics and discharge instructions, thereby improving health outcomes.”
Learning offered each day of APHA
Throughout the four days of APHA 2022, meeting registrants will be able to earn continuing education credits by attending and evaluating scientific sessions. Institute and meeting participants can earn CE contact hours in CHES/MCHES, nursing, continuing medical education and the CPH credential. A list of meeting sessions eligible for continuing education contact hour credits is available in the online program.
“Continuing education and professional development are a key component of APHA’s Annual Meeting,” said Mighty Fine, MPH, CHES, director of APHA’s Center for Public Health Practice and Professional Development. “We want attendees to come away with the knowledge they need for their careers in public health.”
APHA 2022 participants will also be able to gain new skills by spending some time in the lab. Meeting attendees can boost their professional development at the debut of the Leadership Lab, and get their questions answered by an expert at APHA’s popular Annual Meeting Social Media Lab.
New to the Annual Meeting, the Leadership Lab will provide useful advice for continuing and emerging public health leaders.
Presentations at the lab will share tips on topics such as building public health negotiation skills, making the most out of a tight health budget and supporting public-private public health partnerships.
The Social Media Lab, hosted in collaboration with JSI, shares technical assistance and information on best practices for using social media to advance public health. Lab-goers will be able to take in a free one-on-one consultation with an expert or attend short talks.
“Whether you’re new to social media and need the basics or a seasoned user with in-depth questions, lab experts will be ready to help,” Joe Bremner, APHA’s director of strategic communications, told The Nation’s Health. “In our 10 years of offering the lab at the APHA Annual Meeting, thousands of public health professionals have honed their social media skills for public health.”
