Teen pregnancy

“Pregnancy Information for Teens, Second Edition” includes facts about abortion, adoption, prenatal care, nutrition, fetal development and preparing for labor and delivery. The book also offers information on caring for a newborn, locating and paying for child care and receiving child support, among other topics. Medicare

The Medicare Rights Center and AgeOptions have released a toolkit titled “How Medicare Works With Employer-Based Insurance: A Guide for Employers, Professionals and Consumers.” The toolkit is designed to explain how Medicare coordinates with different types of employer-based health insurance, including retiree or union coverage and current employer coverage. Urban food crisis

“The Apple Pushers” is a documentary from award-winning filmmaker Mary Mazzio that chronicles the stories of street cart vendors who sell fruits and vegetables in the poorer neighborhoods of New York City. Following a national screening tour, the film is now available on DVD and also as a downloadable file from such outlets as ITunes and Netflix. Nutrition

Free tools, including posters, logos and graphics and toolkits with talking points and helpful hints, are available for those interested in promoting Meatless Monday in their community. The Meatless Monday campaign is part of the Monday Campaigns, a national movement backed by public health schools that dedicates the first day of every week to health. Proponents of Meatless Monday say cutting meat one day a week can reduce the risk of cancer and cardiovascular disease while helping the environment. Pediatric infectious diseases

The Pediatric Infectious Diseases Society in March released the first issue of its new Journal of the Pediatric Infectious Diseases Society, published by Oxford University Press. The peer-reviewed journal features articles on perinatal, childhood and adolescent infectious diseases and is published quarterly. Learn more at www.pids.org.

Depression

Taking a close look at a common and disabling health problem, the “Depression Sourcebook, Third Edition” offers basic information about the prevalence, symptoms and types of depressive mood disorders. Antiretroviral treatment

Updated “Guidelines for the Use of Antiretroviral Agents in HIV-1-Infected Adults and Adolescents” were released in March by the U.S. Health and Human Services Panel on Antiretroviral Guidelines for Adults and Adolescents. Some key additions to the new guidelines include a section on HIV and the older patient, a table on the cost of antiretroviral drugs and an expanded discussion of the use of hormonal contraceptives in HIV-infected women.
