Tobacco control

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in January released the “Tobacco Control State Highlights 2012” report. The report shows progress all 50 states and the District of Columbia made in preventing tobacco-related death and tobacco use. Mental health

The National Council for Behavioral Health in September released the “Suicide in America” infographic to coincide with Suicide Prevention Week. The image shows suicide risk factor data and statistics relating to deaths among adults, children, military service members and more. Aging

The Gerontological Society of America and Age UK in September published the “Public Policy and Aging Report.” Authored by Dominic Abrams, PhD, a University of Kent social psychology professor, and Hannah Swift, PhD, a University of Kent research associate, the publication covers age discrimination in factors such as housing and employment. Men’s health

Omnigraphics in February published the “Men’s Health Concerns Sourcebook, Fourth Edition.” The book is a source of information on men’s health issues such as prostate cancer and the importance of preventive care, including vaccinations and self-examinations. Environmental health

The Massachusetts Institute of Technology Press in August published “The Silent Epidemic: Coal and the Hidden Threat to Health.” Authored by Alan Lockwood, MD, an emeritus professor of neurology and nuclear medicine at the State University of New York at Buffalo, the book highlights the health risks, such as respiratory problems, associated with exposure to burning coal. Eating disorders

Omnigraphics in January published “Eating Disorders Information For Teens, Third Edition.” The book is a collection of facts on risk factors for anorexia, bulimia and other disorders. Chapters focus on how to diagnose the issue and maintain a healthy diet. For more information, visit www.omnigraphics.com.

Senior health

The National Institutes of Health in August launched “Older Drivers: How Aging Affects Driving” a new topic page on the NIH SeniorHealth website. The page is a resource for elderly drivers, offering tips on safe driving, alternatives to driving and restrictions on older drivers. Behavioral health

The National Institutes of Health’s Office of Behavioral and Social Sciences Research in January began the blog The Connector, which will be a resource for studying and researching behaviors to prevent people from engaging in unhealthy habits such as smoking. The blog, led by Robert Kaplan, PhD, director of the Behavioral and Social Sciences Research Office, will feature podcasts, videos, information on trainings and more. Nutrition

The U.S. Department of Agriculture in September published “How Economic Conditions Affect Participation in USDA Nutrition Assistance Programs.” Authored by USDA agricultural economists Kenneth Hanson, PhD, and Victor Oliveira, MS, the report looks at the effects of economic hardships in the U.S. and the number of Americans who relied on food assistance programs such as the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program. Respiratory health

The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration in November published the report “State Estimates of Adolescent Cigarette Use and Perceptions of Risk of Smoking: 2009 and 2010.” The report shows a drop in teen cigarette use among 12- to 17-year-olds in 41 states between 2002-2010 and calls for states to continue to push teens to be smoke-free. Allergy management

Omnigraphics in January published “Allergy Information For Teens, Second Edition.” The book is an overview of how to manage allergies, such as reactions to food or latex. The book also lists symptoms to look for and how to avoid allergic reactions. For more information, visit www.omnigraphics.com.
