Prisoner health

Oxford University Press in February published “Drug Use in Prisoners: Epidemiology, Implications, and Policy Responses.” Edited by Stuart Kinner, PhD, and Josiah “Jody” Rich, MD, MPH, the book examines, alcohol, tobacco and illicit drug use among prisoner populations with perspectives from 40 international experts. Children’s health

The American Academy of Pediatrics in April published “Achieving a Healthy Weight for Your Child: An Action Plan for Families.” Written by Sandra Hassink, MD, MS, FAAP, the book provides families with strategies and advice to help children with overweight or obesity attain a healthy weight. Opioids

NORC at the University of Chicago and the Appalachian Regional Commission released the Appalachian Overdose Mapping tool. The data visualization tool allows users to look at opioid overdose mortality rates in the Appalachian region of the U.S. by county in relation to socio-economic factors, including unemployment, poverty, education and disability. AIDS

The University of Pennsylvania Press in March published “Before AIDS: Gay Health Politics in the 1970s.” Written by Katie Batza, PhD, the book explores the role of gay health clinics in Boston, Chicago and Los Angeles during the 1980s AIDS crisis. Personal health information

The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services in April released the “ONC Guide to Getting and Using Your Health Records.” The online resource from the Office of the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology helps users access, check and share their electronic health records. Cancer epidemiology

Oxford University Press in February published the “Textbook of Cancer Epidemiology: Third Edition.” Edited by Hans-Olov Adami, MD, PhD; David Hunter, ScD, MPH; Pagona Lagiou, MD, PhD, MS; and Lorelei Mucci, ScD, MPH; the textbook provides information on the epidemiology, biology and genetics of cancer. Housing

Cornell University Press in March published “The One-Way Street of Integration: Fair Housing and the Pursuit of Racial Justice in American Cities.” Written by Edward Goetz, PhD, MA, the book explores the role of housing policy in achieving racial justice. Disability representation

RespectAbility in March published “The Hollywood Disability Toolkit: The RespectAbility Guide to Inclusion in the Entertainment Industry.” The toolkit offers advice to help entertainment professionals ensure the accurate and respectful inclusion of people with disabilities. Alzheimer’s caregiving

The National Institute on Aging in April published “Cómo Cuidar a una Persona con la Enfermedad de Alzheimer: Una Guía Fácil de Usar del Instituto Nacional Sobre el Envejecimiento.” The guide, whose English counterpart is called “Caring for a Person with Alzheimer’s Disease: Your Easy-to-Use Guide from the National Institute on Aging,” provides tips on caregiving for people with Alzheimer’s disease, including changes in behavior, healthy eating and exercise and caregiver health.
