Housing equity
Temple University’s Center for Public Health Law Research published “Health Equity Through Housing: A Blueprint for Systematic Legal Action” by APHA member Scott Burris, JD, and others in July. The report is the sixth and final addition to the center’s series on housing equity. It serves as a guide for using the law to improve health equity through housing. Racism in research
In August, Gallery/Jeter Publishing published “The Organ Thieves: The Shocking Story of the First Heart Transplant in the Segregated South,” by investigative journalist Chip Jones. The book details the life of Bruce Tucker, a Black man forced into a heart transplant trial, as well as the racial inequalities surrounding the development of heart transplant procedures. The National Institute on Minority Health and Health Disparities launched a new “Research Spotlights” section on its website in July. The resource highlights recent research findings on minority health and health disparities. For more information, visit www.nimhd.nih.gov.
Occupational health
Public Citizen released “Protecting Workers from Heat Stress and COVID-19: Recommendations for Employers” in July. Advantage Media Group published “Pulling Wisdom: Filling the Gaps of Cross-Cultural Communication for Health Care Providers” by Cathy Hung, DDS, in July. Mental health
The National Comprehensive Cancer Network announced the NCCN Distress Thermometer in July. The resource helps health care providers recognize and address aspects of distress experienced by at cancer patients. The resource is available in 46 languages. For more information, visit www.nccn.org.
COVID-19 and flu
In July, George Mason University released a free screening tool to help differentiate between COVID-19 and seasonal flu. The tool was developed by Farrokh Alemi, PhD, MS, a professor in the College of Health and Human Services at George Mason University.
