Baezconde-Garbanati, Green, to advise on tobacco

APHA members Lourdes Baezconde-Garbanati, PhD, and Lawrence Green, DrPH, MPH, in August were appointed by California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger to the state’s Tobacco Education and Research Oversight Committee. Baezconde-Garbanati is an associate professor of preventive medicine at the University of Southern California’s Keck School of Medicine. Green is an adjunct professor in the Department of Epidemiology and Biostatistics at the University of California at San Francisco School of Medicine.

Goldman named dean at George Washington University

APHA member Lynn Goldman, MD, MPH, in August became dean of the School of Public Health and Health Services at George Washington University in Washington, D.C. She most recently served as a professor of environmental health sciences at Johns Hopkins University’s Bloomberg School of Public Health and as principal investigator for the Johns Hopkins National Children’s Study Center. In September, Goldman received a Heinz Award for her work to protect people from toxic chemicals.

Guttmacher takes reins at NICHD

APHA member Alan E. Guttmacher, MD, in July was named director of the Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institute of Child Health and Human Development at the National Institutes of Health. He is a former acting director of the National Human Genome Research Institute, where he also oversaw NIH’s involvement in the U.S. surgeon general’s Family History Initiative.

Jacob assumes seat on NACCHO board

APHA member Claude-Alix Jacob, MPH, in July was elected to the board of directors of the National Association of County and City Health Officials. Jacob is chief public health officer for Cambridge, Mass., and is a former chair of APHA’s Black Caucus of Health Workers.

Troutman to lead public health leadership institute

APHA member Adewale Troutman, MD, MPH, MA, in September announced he will leave his position as director of public health in Louisville, Ky., to become director of the University of South Florida’s Public Health Practice and Public Health Leadership Institute. Troutman, who is also a member of APHA’s Executive Board, will also serve as a professor at the University of South Florida and as a consultant to the Department of Community Health in Tampa. Troutman was to assume his new duties in early November.

Hill to preside over workplace safety organization

Darryl C. Hill, PhD, in July became president of the American Society of Safety Engineers, a 32,000-member organization promoting workplace safety and health. Hill is vice president for safety and health at ABB Inc. in Auburn Hills, Mich.

Texas A&M promotes Sharkey

Joseph Sharkey, PhD, MPH, RD, in August was promoted to the position of professor at Texas A&M Health Science Center School of Rural Public Health. Among his other duties, Sharkey chairs the Healthy Food Advisory Committee, which was established by the Texas Legislature to study the retail availability of healthy foods in underserved areas of the state.

White to study health care policy

Chapin D. White, PhD, in September joined the Center for Studying Health System Change as a senior health researcher. He previously served as a postdoctoral fellow at the National Bureau of Economic Research and as a consultant to the Medicare Payment Advisory Commission.
