Prevention book

APHA Press and Jossey Bass in November released the second edition of “Prevention is Primary: Strategies for Community Well-Being.” Making the case for quality community prevention efforts that prevent illnesses and injuries from occurring in the first place, the book provides models, methods and approaches for building health and equity in communities. Public health buyer’s guide

APHA in August announced the launch of the “Public Health Buyer’s Guide.” Online at http://publichealthbuyersguide.com and offered through a partnership with MultiView Inc., the online guide serves as a search engine to help public health professionals easily locate products and services unique to public health.

Flu awareness website

The Joey Holt Foundation for Flu Awareness in August launched a new website, online at www.joeyholtfoundation.org, aimed at educating parents and caregivers about the severity of influenza and the importance of getting kids vaccinated. The foundation is named after 7-year-old Joey Holt, who died in November 2009 from complications of H1N1.

Oil spill resource

The National Academies Press in August released “Assessing the Effects of the Gulf of Mexico Oil Spill on Human Health: A Summary of the June 2010 Workshop.” The publication summarizes the background, presentations, discussions and public comments that occurred during a workshop convened by the Institute of Medicine in New Orleans in June to examine options for measuring the oil spill’s potential health effects on different human populations. Spanish-language health information

The Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality in September released eight new evidence-based guides to help Spanish speakers understand and compare the risks, benefits and side effects of treatments for a range of health conditions. Health insurance tool

The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services in August released the Insurance Finder, a new Web tool that makes searching for coverage options easier. The tool enables anyone with a website or blog to embed a tool on their site allowing them to begin the process of searching for coverage options. Peripheral arterial disease resource

NIHSeniorHealth in September released new materials about the risk factors, diagnosis and treatment of peripheral arterial disease. The free information, online at www.nihseniorhealth.gov/peripheralarterialdisease/toc.html, joins a host of other research-based, easily accessible information on a range of health issues of interest to older people.

Over-the-counter medicine resource

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration in July launched “Medicines in My Home,” a multimedia educational program designed to teach teens and adults how to choose over-the-counter medicines and use them safely. Online at www.fda.gov/medsinmyhome, the site includes print materials and resources for parents, teachers, students and caregivers.
