Schaffner receives achievement award

APHA member William Schaffner, MD, in March was presented the Duncan Clark Award by the Association for Prevention Teaching and Research. Schaffner, who is chair of preventive medicine at Vanderbilt University Medical Center, received the award in recognition of a lifetime of achievement in public health.

California Wellness Foundation honors leadership in diversity

APHA member Jose Ramon Fernandez-Pena, MD, MPA, in May received the California Wellness Foundation’s 2011 Champions of Health Professions Diversity Award. Other award recipients were Charles Alexander, PhD, and John Matusi, PhD. The award honors leadership in increasing the diversity of California’s health care workforce.

Shirley named president of health association

APHA member Lillian Shirley, MPH, MPA, RN, in July was named president of the National Association of County and City Health Officials. Shirley is director of the Multnomah County Health Department in Portland, Ore.

Clark named chair of behavioral health council

Carl Clark, MD, in July was named chair of the board of directors of the National Council for Community Behavioral Healthcare. A psychiatrist and associate professor at the University of Colorado, Clark serves as CEO of the Mental Health Center of Denver.

Families USA receives video award

Families USA in July received a Telly Award for its video, “The Real Cost of Repeal.” The video, now on YouTube, examines the potential positive impact of health reform on the lives of three people. Presented by a broad partnership of broadcast entities, the Telly Award honors outstanding film and Web productions throughout the United States and internationally.

Bond named dean at Cleveland State University

Meredith Bond, MD, in June was appointed dean of the College of Sciences and Health Professions at Cleveland State University. Bond previously served as chair of the Physiology Department at the University of Maryland School of Medicine.

Saks receives mental health activism award

Elyn Saks, JD, MA, in July was honored with the National Alliance on Mental Illness’ Gloria Huntley Award. Saks is a professor of law, psychology and psychiatry at the University of Southern California’s Gould School of Law.
