Nursing practice

Nursing honor society Sigma Theta Tau International in July published two new practice guides. “Volunteering at Home and Abroad: The Essential Guide for Nurses” offers direction on domestic and global volunteer opportunities, while “Implementing Evidence-Based Practice: Real-Life Success Stories” provides a supplement to evidence-based practice textbooks. Both are available at www.nursingknowledge.org.

Oral health

The National Maternal and Child Oral Health Resource Center in May released a tip sheet to assist health care providers in improving the oral health of pregnant women, children and infants enrolled in the Head Start program. “Medical Providers and Head Start: What You Should Know About Oral Health and How You Can Help” can be ordered at www.mchoralhealth.org.

Child health

The Joint Commission in July released the fifth episode of its animated “Speak Up” video series. “Speak Up: Kid Power!” encourages children to become more active in their own health care. Download the episode at www.jointcommission.org.

Heat safety

The National Institute on Aging in July released a primer for diagnosing and treating heat sickness in the elderly. “Hyperthermia: Too Hot for Your Health,” is available in both English and Spanish at www.nia.nih.gov.

Parenting

The American Academy of Pediatrics in July published a guidebook to common childhood ailments. “My Child is Sick! Expert Advice for Managing Common Illnesses and Injuries,” draws on pediatric clinical protocols to aid parents in treating their children. Diabetes

The National Diabetes Education Program in June released a series of short videos to help diabetes patients make healthy lifestyle changes. The videos supplement Diabetes HealthSense, the program’s online library for health resources. The videos and other materials are available at www.yourdiabetesinfo.org.

Occupational health

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration in June launched an interactive online tool to help employers determine if an injury or illness is related to work. The Recordkeeping Advisor links to a collection of resources to help employers comply with federal recordkeeping laws. For more information or to use the tool, visit www.osha.gov.

Health and wellness

Humana Inc. in July launched HumanaVille.com, an online community that links members to health and wellness resources. Members can interact through chat programs, post questions and answers on discussion forums and access information on a variety of health topics.
