Public health practices

Oxford University Press in October published “Public Health Practice: What Works.” Authored by APHA member Jonathan Fielding, MD, MPH, MA, MBA, and Steven Teutsch, MD, MPH, both of the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health, the book is a guide filled with best public health practices based on case studies from Los Angeles County, Calif. The book also contains a foreword from APHA Executive Director Georges Benjamin, MD, FACP, FNAPA, FACEP (E). For more information, visit www.oup.com.

Health assessments

Eight organizations including PolicyLink and Human Impact Partners, collaborated to release “Guidance and Best Practices for Stakeholder Participation in Health Impact Assessments” in September. The document outlines best practices in linking community organizations with health care professionals to tackle health issues such as obesity. Water quality

The World Health Organization and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, in October co-published “Animal Waste, Water Quality and Human Health.” The book looks at the effects of animal waste on the human water supply and its potential to become a public health threat. Domestic violence

The “Domestic Violence Sourcebook, Fourth Edition,” published in November by Omnigraphics, provides information on how to identify signs of abuse, as well as a guide to what victims can expect in dealing with the legal system and moving out of an abusive home. Prescription drugs

The BeSafeRx – Know Your Online Pharmacy website launched in September by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration as an Internet resource of tips on how to identify fake pharmacy companies. For more information, visit www.fda.gov/BeSafeRx.

Healthy diet

The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s SuperTracker in September reached 1 million registered users and remains a free online resource for those trying to plan healthy meals and lose weight since December 2011. For more information, visit www.ChooseMyPlate.gov.

Pain management

Massachusetts Institute of Technology Press, in September published “Understanding Pain.” Authored by Fernando Cervero, MD, PhD, DSc, director of McGill University’s Alan Edwards Centre for Research on Pain, the book contains information on different types of pain such as emotional and chronic pain and the reasons people experience it. Sexual health

The “Sexually Transmitted Diseases Sourcebook, Fifth Edition,” published in November by Omnigraphics, is a guide on sexual health topics such as the types of sexually transmitted infections, risks for contracting an STI and treatment options. For more information, visit www.omnigraphics.com.
