Child development

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in January launched the Milestone Tracker app. The app is designed to track the development of children ages 2 months to 5 years. For more information, visit https://www.cdc.gov/.

Suicide and gun violence

Oxford University Press in February published “Guns and Suicide.” Written by Michael Anestis, the book covers scientific data and evidence useful for those interested in issues related to gun violence and suicide. For more information, visit https://global.oup.com.

Community health

Networks Northwest in December published “Making Connections: Understanding Community Health, Safety, and Welfare in Northwest Michigan.” The guidebook provides an understanding of how local policies affect public health issues in communities. For more information, visit https://msue.anr.msu.edu.

Workplace conditions

Cornell University Press in December published “Dying to Work.” Written by Jonathan Karmel, the book discusses unsafe working conditions, including incidents of workers who were injured or killed on the job. For more information, visit https://cornellpress.cornell.edu.

HIV/AIDS

University of California Press in November published “HIV and the Criminalization of Sickness.” Written by Trevor Hoppe, the book discusses the criminalization of people with HIV and other diseases. For more information, visit https://www.ucpress.edu.

Adult immunization

The American College of Physicians, the American Pharmacists Association and The Gerontological Society of America released “Aging and Immunity: The Important Role of Vaccines” in December. The guidebook serves to assist healthcare professionals in reinforcing the importance the adult immunization and understanding the biological impact of aging on immunity. Mental illness

The National Institute of Mental Health in January launched a redesigned Statistics section on its website. It features interactive data visuals and sharing capabilities. The section includes consequences of and statistics on prevalence and treatment for mental illnesses. Abortion

Oxford University Press in February published “Scarlet A.” Written by Katie Watson, JD, the book explains current U.S. laws on abortion and provides an overview of conflicting approaches to abortion ethics. It serves to improve the abortion debate in the U.S through law, philosophy, statistics and headline.
