Homish named NIH review member
APHA member Gregory Homish, PhD, in May was named a member of the Social Sciences and Population Studies B Study Section of the National Institutes of Health’s Center for Scientific Review. Homish is an associate professor of the University of Buffalo’s School of Public Health Department of Community Health and Health Behavior.
Lee elected to board of directors
APHA member Ji-Hyun Lee, DrPH, MS, in May was elected to the American Statistical Association’s board of directors as a council of chapters representative. Lee is a professor of biostatistics at the University of Florida’s College of Public Health and Health Professions and the College of Medicine.
Barkin wins research award
Shari Barkin, MD, MSHS, in May was awarded the 2019 American Pediatric Association Research Award. Barkin is a pediatrics professor and chief of general pediatrics at the Monroe Carrel Jr. Children’s Hospital at Vanderbilt University.
Carrel awarded grant
Margaret Carrel, PhD, MA, in May was awarded a $200,000 Andrew Carnegie Fellowship grant to conduct spatial epidemiology research. Carrel is an associate professor of geographical and sustainability sciences at the University of Iowa.
John-Stewart wins grant
Grace John-Stewart, MD, PhD, MPH, in May was awarded an $828,368 grant from National Institutes of Health and the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services to study HIV exposure in children. She is a University of Washington professor of global health, epidemiology, medicine and pediatrics.
Santos named president
Robert Santos, MA, was elected president of the American Statistical Association in May. Santos also serves as vice president and chief methodologist at the Urban Institute.
Price named vice president
Dionne Price, PhD, MS, in May was elected vice president of the American Statistical Association. Price works as a mathematical statistician and division director in the Office of Biostatistics of the Center for Drug Evaluation and Research at the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.
Sharma wins award
Virender Sharma, PhD, RSMAS, MTech, MSc, in May was awarded the Outstanding Distinguished Scientist Award by Sigma Xi, the international research honor society at Texas A&M University. Sharma is a professor of environmental and occupational health at Texas A&M’s School of Public Health.
Mair wins award
William Mair, PhD, in May received the 2019 Armen H. Tashjian Jr. Award for excellence in endocrine research. Mair is an associate professor of genetics and complex diseases at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health.
Wise elected president
Lauren Wise, ScD, MS, in May was named president-elect of the Society for Pediatric and Perinatal Epidemiologic Research. Wise is a professor of epidemiology at the Boston University School of Public Health.
