Urban planning

Princeton University Press in October published “Changing Places: The Science and Art of New Urban Planning,” by John MacDonald, PhD, MA; APHA member Charles Branas, PhD; and Robert Stokes, PhD, MA. The authors discuss the disconnect between people who implement place-based changes, such as planners and developers, and urban scientists who rigorously evaluate changes through testing and experimentation. For more information, visit http://press.princeton.edu.

Birth, death

Johns Hopkins University Press in December published “The Medicalization of Birth and Death,” by Lauren Hall, PhD, MA. This book describes how and why birth and death became medicalized events. For more information, visit http://jhupbooks.press.jhu.edu.

Global epidemics

Johns Hopkins University Press in December published “Global Epidemics, Local Implications: African Immigrants and the Ebola Crisis in Dallas,” by Kevin J.A. Thomas, PhD. This book highlights the complex ways in which disease outbreaks that begin in one part of the world affect the lives of immigrants in another. For more information, visit http://jhupbooks.press.jhu.edu.

Professional well-being

The National Academies Press in December published “Taking Action Against Clinician Burnout: A Systems Approach to Professional Well-Being,” by the National Academy of Sciences, Engineering and Medicine. Border walls

In January, Duke University Press published “Fencing in Democracy: Border Walls, Necrocitizenship and the Security State,” by Miguel Diaz-Barriga and Margaret E. Dorsey. The National Commission on Correctional Health Care and the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention in November released “Suicide Prevention Resource Guide: National Response Plan for Suicide Prevention in Corrections.” The guide is a resource on preventing suicide in correctional facilities.
