COVID-19 vaccines

Seattle health and education leaders published a new guide on COVID-19 vaccines for kids in May. The “Handbook for Health Heroes” is presented in comic book-style guide to help answer questions from families about the vaccines. The free book — created by Seattle Public Schools, Public Health—Seattle and King County, and the Seattle Department of Education and Early Learning — is available at https://education.seattle.gov.

Health policy

In May, Amplify Publishing published “The Health Care Labyrinth: A Guide to Navigating Health Plans and Fixing American Health Insurance,” by Marc Ryan, a health care software technology executive. The book shares insights on health reform, universal access to care, costs and other health care issues. Visit www.amplifypublishing.com for more information.

Future pandemics

Penguin Random House published “How to Prevent the Next Pandemic,” by Bill Gates in May. The Microsoft founder and philanthropist outlines a plan for preventing future pandemics through collaboration with public health experts. Opioid settlement funds

Following legal settlements against opioid manufacturers, the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health has released a set of strategies for spending settlement funds. The resources provide local and state governments with evidence-based guidance that can help communities combat the opioid crisis. Visit opioidprinciples.jhsph.edu for more information.

Parenting

MIT Press published “The Parent Trap: How to Stop Overloading Parents and Fix Our Inequality Crisis,” by Nate Hilger, PhD, an economist and data scientist, in April. The book calls for a federal child development program to help guide people as parents. Visit mitpress.mit.edu for more information.

World inequality

In July, Harvard Press published “World Inequality Report 2022” edited by Lucas Chancel, PhD and written by Thomas Piketty, PhD, MSc, Emmanuel Saez, MD, PhD, and Gabriel Zucman, PhD, MSc. Systems and power

MIT Press published “Discard Studies: Wasting, Systems and Power,” by Max Liboiron, PhD, MFA, and Josh Lepawsky, PhD in May. The book details how different systems in society control power. Visit mitpress.mit.edu for more information.

Environmental news

In May, the Environmental Working Group launched a nonprofit environmental journalism initiative, The New Lede. The news site will spotlight stories on environmental and public health, featuring investigative reporting, data analysis and commentary and human-interest stories.
